Rate gyro : Principles of Operation. The Crossbow DMU [dynamic measurement unit] contains three accelerometers and three angular rate gyros. The three angular rate gyros use vibrating piezoelectric ceramic transducers to measure the Coriolis acceleration. In the 1830's G. G. de Coriolis discovered that an object moving perpendicular to a rotating frame will cause an observer on the rotating frame to see an apparent acceleration of the object.

Crossbow's AHRS500GA is a strap-down subsystem that delivers heading measurements with dynamic accuracy of +/-2. 0 and static accuracy of +/-1. 5. Attitude accuracy is less than +/-0. 5 degrees(static) and +/-2. 0 degrees(dynamic). Range is +/-180 degrees. The system features the industry's highest performing sensors, including advanced MEMs accelerometers and rate gyros that provide much higher reliability than traditional spinning mass gyros.
