A French breed developed by crossing Thoroughbreds on strudy native horses. The ideal is a big horse with good movement, capable of covering ground, with a calm temperament and a big-boned Thoroughbred-type conformation. The breed is superior as a sport horse.

French Saddlebred. Also known by: Cheval de selle français, French Saddle Horse, French Warmblood. Developed in the 1950’s from halfbreds, including Anglo-Norman and its derivatives Charentais, Charolais, Vendeen and also Corlais, the French Saddlebred is a light riding horse found throughout France.

The Anglo-Norman horse is the most recognized foundation stock for the Selle Français. However, many of the local French breeds which were bred as saddle horses like the Vendeen, Charollais, Limousin, Corlais, Angevin, Angonin and Charentais played an important role in the breeds development.

[...] À un modèle compact et lourd, à un manque d'élégance dans la tête, à un défaut d'équilibre naturel, le selle français oppose une puissance extraordinaire, une aptitude à l'obstacle innée, un caractère docile et une grande taille (1,63 m à 1,73 m) qui en font le cheval de selle par excellence.

Le Selle Français qui évolue avec succès sur la scène sportive internationale est le fruit d'une longue sélection qui a connu, au cours du XXème siècle, deux grandes mutations.

Pour être admis dans ce stud-book, le cheval doit être issu d'un croisement entre un parent Selle Français et un parent d'une des 4 races considérées comme «facteur de selle français» : Pur-sang Anglais, Pur-Sang Arabe, Anglo-Arabe ou Trotteur Français agrée.
