A Turk's head knot is a decorative knot with a basket weave pattern surrounding a cylinder shaped object. The name is used to describe the general family of all such knots rather than one individual knot. The most common use for the Turk's head is to mark the "king spoke" of a vessel' s wheel; when this spoke is upright the rudder is in a central position. Otherwise, the knot is used mostly for decoration, and occasionally as anti-chafing protection. The number of leads of a Turk's head is the number of crossings it makes as it goes around the circumference of the cylinder. The number of bends is the number of strands along the long axis of the cylinder. Depending on the number of leads and bends, a Turk's head may be tied using a single strand or multiple strands. Mathematically, the number of strands is the greatest common divisor of the number of leads and the number of bends; the knot may be tied with a single strand if and only if the two numbers are coprime. The knot was originally named because of its resemblance to a turban.

The Government of Canada has established a Canadian Border Task Force to ensure that the Smart Border initiative is implemented effectively. In the December 10 Budget, the Government of Canada committed to investing more than $1. 2 billion in measures designed to make the border more open and efficient. Of this amount, $600 million has been appropriated for a new program to improve infrastructure that supports major border crossings, such as highways and commercial vehicle processing centres.

Some concerns regarding vegetation and trees obstructing the boundary vista were addressed with two additional projects that were carried out during October and November. These involved vista-clearing along the 45th Parallel(the Quebec-Vermont/New York border), in particular along the major road crossings; and along the South Line(Quebec-Maine border).

The 2003 Compendium contains port descriptions(ie. ownership, physical layout, annual traffic data, etc.) as well as current information on on-going, planned and proposed infrastructure projects at border crossings, including their approaches. The Compendium focused on ports of entry with dedicated commercial operations or significant non-commercial traffic.... TBWG Compendium Subcommittee members proceeded to enhance the crossing descriptions with commodity and other new data, and all information was updated to 2004. The result is an on-line Border Infrastructure Compendium that provides a full picture of the busiest Canada-U. S. commercial land border crossings.

Transport Canada. This program promotes railway safety by making it easier to close certain railway crossings. The program resulted from the review of the Railway Safety Act held between 1994 and 1999, which recognized that closing passive railway crossings in Canada(those that do not have automated warning systems) would help improve the safety of the rail system. As a result, the act was amended in 1999, giving the Minister of Transport the authority to enter into agreements with parties possessing the rights to use such crossings so that the crossings could be closed.

The first CANPASS project underway was CANPASS-Highway. The CANPASS-Highway program will eventually be a national version of the PACE(Peace Arch Crossing Entry) project in B. C. which combines pre-approval processing, express lanes, a self-declaration card, and an automated billing system to speed up border crossings. Currently PACE users, for a $25 annual fee, receive a special windshield decal authenticity. Users deposit declaration cards in a box at the inspection booth before proceeding. Duties are charged to a credit card. Approximately 60, 000 vehicles use the PACE express lane to ensure that only approved travellers use it, and that those who do comply with the terms and conditions of the program. If users don’t comply, their privileges are withdrawn and appropriate penalties applied. Until now the CANPASS-Highway system for pre-approved travellers has been available only at four border crossings in British Columbia. However, down the road(so to speak) other suitable Canadian border crossing sites will have CANPASS-Highway capabilities.

Actuellement, ce centre régional a une capacité de transport par gazoduc de plus de 3,5 milliards de pieds cubes par jour et une capacité de stockage excédant 870 milliards de pieds cubes. Grâce à des interconnexions le long du tracé du gazoduc et dans la région d'Ellisburg-Leidy (important marché de gaz naturel pour la côte est), Northwinds aura accès à une capacité de transport de plus de cinq milliards de pieds cubes sur les systèmes de gazoduc inter-États qui approvisionnent les principaux marchés de la côte est.
