Parallel-group trials allocate each participant to a single intervention for comparison with one or more alternative interventions. In contrast, crossover trials allocate each participant to a sequence of interventions. A simple randomized crossover design is an "AB/BA" design in which participants are randomized initially to intervention A or intervention B, and then "cross over" to intervention B or intervention A, respectively.

OBS

Not to be confused with "crossover clinical study, "which has a broader meaning than "crossover clinical trial" : a clinical trial is a type of clinical study, but the reverse is not true.

Une étude clinique randomisée [...] suggère que l'IL-6 [interleukine-6] pourrait [...] jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la prévention du cancer colorectal associée à l'exercice physique régulier. Dans cette étude, des chercheurs britanniques ont recruté 16 hommes en bonne santé, mais qui présentaient trois facteurs de risque de cancer colorectal, soit un âge de 50 ans et plus, un surpoids [...] et une absence d'activité physique régulière. Les participants ont été assignés de façon aléatoire à réaliser soit un exercice aérobique [...] ou à demeurer inactif durant cette période. Une semaine plus tard, chacun des participants a été soumis à la condition inverse (ceux qui avaient fait de l'exercice étaient au repos et vice versa). La force de ce type d'étude croisée est que chacun des participants est exposé aux deux conditions expérimentales testées et qu'on peut donc comparer directement leurs effets sur une même personne.

A trial in which the subjects receive, in sequence, the treatment (or control intervention), then, after a specified time, the control intervention (or treatment).

OBS

In this type of study, the subjects are their own controls, and randomisation is used to determine the order in which a subject receives the treatment and the control intervention. Washout periods are usually included, since otherwise the effects of the first treatment could carry over into the period when the second is given.

Dans ce type d'étude, le sujet est son propre témoin, et la répartition aléatoire est utilisée pour déterminer dans quel ordre il recevra le traitement et l’intervention de référence (témoin). Comme l'effet du premier traitement peut se poursuivre pendant l'administration du deuxième, on ménage habituellement des phases sans traitement actif afin de pallier cet inconvénient.
