CRUDE SHALE OIL [6 records]

Record 1 2017-08-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Crude Oil and Petroleum Products
  • Oil Production
DEF

[Oil that] is found in reservoir rocks which have enough permeability to allow the oil to flow to a vertical or horizontal well.

CONT

Unconventional oil refers to oil reserves that cannot be feasibly accessed using conventional drilling techniques. These reserves –notably tight oil, oil shale, and bitumen– must be extracted using novel methods. In contrast, conventional oil typically refers to crude oil which uses conventional vertical drilling techniques.

OBS

conventional oil: term standardized by Environment Canada and the Translation Bureau for use in the Air Pollutant Emission Inventory Report.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétroles bruts et dérivés
  • Production pétrolière
CONT

Record 6 1993-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climate Change
DEF

The recoverable fossil fuel reserves(coal, gas, crude oils, oil shale, and tar sands) and biomass that can be used in fuel production and consumption.

OBS

This definition is very general and rather confusing : there is defined limits separating the meaning of the technical terms : reserve, resource, exploitable resource, potentially exploitable resource, etc. (see Energy terminology - A Multi-lingual Glossary, WEC-2 1983, for more specific definitions).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Changements climatiques
DEF
