When ATC [air traffic control] issues a cruise clearance in conjunction with an unpublished route, an appropriate crossing altitude is specified to ensure terrain clearance until the aircraft reaches a fix, point, or route where the altitude information is available.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
CONT

As the aircraft approached the planned cruise altitude of 22, 000 ft, the pilot noted an unusually low indication on the engine oil pressure gauge, which was followed by the low-oil-pressure caution annunciator light, and then by the low-oil-pressure warning annunciator light.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
CONT

Normal pressurization is controlled with the altitude controller and RATE selector, located on the pressurization module. Before takeoff, the pressurization module AUTO/MAN switch should be set to AUTO, the CABIN AIR switch should be set to NORM, the AIRCRAFT ALT selector knob on the altitude controller should be set to cruise altitude, and the IN NORMAL/OUT DEFOG knob should be pushed in.

Record 5 2005-11-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • CBRNE Weapons
CONT

The design of the cockpit of the Vulcan reflects the need to shield the crew from the effects of a nuclear flash, there being very little window space. Crew would sit in darkness shielded from the pilots by the fallout curtain, and with the small portholes usually blocked.

CONT

... a new bomber would.. need to cruise economically at high altitude and fly effectively at very low altitude with the cockpit shuttered against nuclear flash.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Armes CBRNE
CONT

Record 6 2002-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Missiles and Rockets
  • Sea Operations (Military)
DEF

A cruise missile capable of being launched from a submerged or surfaced submarine or from a surface ship.

CONT

The U. S. SLCM [sea-launched cruise missile] under development is sized for launch from standard submarine torpedo tubes... The SLCM is to be developed in both strategic and tactical variants, the former being able to carry a nuclear warhead about 1500 nm. The latter will be designed to be launched from surface ships as well as submarines, primarily as a non-nuclear anti-ship missile with a range of up to several hundred miles. The SLCM will have a low cruise altitude flight profile and will have a high accuracy. The Soviet Union currently has SLCMs of a shorter range deployed on both nuclear-and diesel-powered submarines and surface ships.

OBS

sea-launched cruise missile; SLCM; Slickum: terms and abbreviation extracted from the "Disarmament and Peace Keeping" glossary with the permission of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Key term(s)

OBS

Record 8 1988-03-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • General Vocabulary
CONT

«Combat persistence» as used here means the number of steady-state turns that can be accomplished at the flight condition of altitude and Mach number. These data assume the aircraft to be full of fuel at the initiation of combat. Again, one sees that the larger number of turns is achieved at speeds near the cruise speed; the airframe is efficient near cruise speed. The engines were specifically designed and chosen to match this point of airframe efficiency. Further the speed at which sufficient combat persistence is obtained for a "sensible" fight(allowing at least three turns) lie below Mach 1.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Vocabulaire général
CONT
