English

Subject field(s)
  • Submarines (Naval Forces)
  • Missiles and Rockets
CONT

There are three categories of submarines : the cruise missile submarine, the attack submarine, and the ballistic missile submarine. They are either powered by nuclear or diesel fuel.

Subject field(s)
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

How can we make the engine more efficient without giving up a single horsepower of performance when we need it? These days, the answer is engine downspeeding. This is not a reduction in the size of the engine; instead, it's a reduction in the rpm [revolutions per minute] of the engine, especially at highway cruising speeds between 61 and 68 miles per hour. Downspeeding allows the engine to cruise in its sweet spot, reducing friction and increasing fuel efficiency.

English

Subject field(s)
  • General Vocabulary
CONT

«Combat persistence» as used here means the number of steady-state turns that can be accomplished at the flight condition of altitude and Mach number. These data assume the aircraft to be full of fuel at the initiation of combat. Again, one sees that the larger number of turns is achieved at speeds near the cruise speed; the airframe is efficient near cruise speed. The engines were specifically designed and chosen to match this point of airframe efficiency. Further the speed at which sufficient combat persistence is obtained for a "sensible" fight(allowing at least three turns) lie below Mach 1.

Domaine(s)
  • Vocabulaire général
CONT

(...) on constate que c'est au voisinage de la vitesse de croisière que la «persistance au combat» est la plus élevée. C'est au voisinage de cette vitesse que le rendement aérodynamique de la cellule est le meilleur.

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
CONT

The engine fuel system is completely self contained and delivers fuel at the proper pressure and flow to satisfy engine pressure ratios selected by the throttles. The engine pressure ratio fuel control also enables climb and cruise ratings to be maintained for a fixed throttle position irrespective of ambient temperature up to international standard atmosphere plus 15°C.

Subject field(s)
  • Aeroindustry
CONT

The TRI60 demonstrated start-up and acceleration to cruise thrust in less than five seconds entirely by means of the windmilling effect created by ram pressure. At launch, the only engine-starting actions required are the opening of the fuel cock and the firing of two pyrotechnic igniters in the combustion chamber.

P. C. B. [Plenum Chamber Burning] consists of burning fuel in the front(cold) jet streams to give thrust boost for take-off in supersonic flight and, in consequence, a better thrust/S. F. C. matching in throttle-back subsonic cruise at low altitude.
