CRUISING ENGINE [5 records]

Record 1 2015-07-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

How can we make the engine more efficient without giving up a single horsepower of performance when we need it? These days, the answer is engine downspeeding. This is not a reduction in the size of the engine; instead, it's a reduction in the rpm [revolutions per minute] of the engine, especially at highway cruising speeds between 61 and 68 miles per hour. Downspeeding allows the engine to cruise in its sweet spot, reducing friction and increasing fuel efficiency.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Moteur (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Helicopters (Military)
  • Types of Aircraft
DEF

A helicopter with an auxiliary propulsion system which provides thrust in excess of that which the rotor alone could produce, thereby permitting increased forward speeds; wings may or may not be provided to reduce the lift required from the rotor system. [Definition standardized by NATO.]

CONT

The rotor of the compound helicopter is powered for take-off; once cruising altitude is reached, the engine power is used to drive a propeller for forward thrust, and the rotor is allowed to freewheel and autorotate as do the blades of an autogiro. The aircraft usually has small wings to furnish lift in forward flight...

CONT

The Lockheed AH-56A Cheyenne ... represents a recent addition to the compound helicopter family ...

OBS

compound helicopter: term standardized by NATO.

During ground operation, the manifold pressure must not exceed the specified maximum cruising manifold pressure, to prevent overheating of the engine while operating in the low rpm(high pitch) position.

Subject field(s)
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
OBS

The car does not use a hydrogen fuel cell, but a V12 internal combustion engine that is powered by liquid hydrogen.... The use of liquid hydrogen allows a much higher cruising range than gaseous hydrogen for the same space, but the lack of public liquid hydrogen refuelling stations require the 750 hL to also run on gasoline.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Moteur (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF
