CRUMPLING [5 records]

Record 1 2017-03-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Plate Tectonics
DEF

An orogenic phase in the Late Mesozoic (Eoalpine) and the current Cenozoic that has formed the mountain ranges of the Alpide belt.

CONT

The Alpine orogeny produced intense metamorphism of preexisting rocks, crumpling of rock strata, and uplift accompanied by both normal and thrust faulting. It was responsible for the elevation of the present Alps, from which the name derives, and for the uplifting of plateaus in the Balkan Peninsula and in Corsica and Sardinia.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Tectonique des plaques

Record 2 2015-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Flights (Air Transport)
CONT

About 75 minutes into the flight, and as the instructor was demonstrating approaches into a mountain bowl, at an elevation of about 2 000 ft AMSL(above mean sea level) in a steady turn in light turbulence, both crew members heard a loud bang and a crumpling noise.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Vols (Transport aérien)
CONT

Record 3 2004-01-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
DEF

Scientific discipline that is concerned with rock deformation of large and small scale and, hence, with the study of faulting, folding, and crumpling of rock strata of the Earth's crust and the effects of these processes...

OBS

[The] study of the largest structural features, such as rift valleys, midoceanic ridges, or the distribution of continents and ocean basins, is variously termed ... geotectonics ...

OBS

Tectonics ... is closely related to structural geology, with which the distinctions are blurred, but tectonics generally deals with larger features.

OBS

for "tectonics": This nuance is not made by many authors.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique
DEF

DEF

A mud-crack cast that displays tortuous and contorted crumpling produced by the adjustment of the sand filling to the compaction of the enclosing mud matrix...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
DEF

Déformation ou plissotement ptygmatiques résultant de l'adaptation du remplissage sableux d'une fissure (dans l'argile) à la compaction de l'argile encaissante.
