Le premier risque pour les individus ensevelis est de développer un syndrome d'écrasement ou « crush syndrome » lors de leur délivrance. L'écrasement prolongé des membres par des poutrelles de béton ou des pierres arrête en effet la circulation du sang. Les muscles, non irrigués, libèrent des quantités de molécules toxiques lors du rétablissement de la circulation. La conséquence est la survenue d'une insuffisance rénale aiguë.
