DAVIDITE [3 records]

Record 1 2012-04-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
  • Radioactive Ores (Mining)
DEF

[Said of a mineral that is] amorphous because of the disruption of the crystal structure by radiation from contained or nearby radioactive atoms.

CONT

The final group of amorphous minerals comprises those which were originally crystalline but have had their structures destroyed by radioactive bombardment. Such minerals are known as metamicts.

CONT

A few metamict minerals, notably brannerite... and davidite, are important constituents of uranium ores in Ontario and Australia.

Domaine(s)

  • Minerais radioactifs (Mines métalliques)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A moderately to strongly radioactive mineral containing titanium, iron, rare earths, uranium, vanadium, and chromium; dark brown to brownish black.

OBS

davidite :... Found in pegmatites associated with quartz, biotite, ilmenite, rutile, iron and copper sulfides. Also found in hypersthene gabbro and anorthosite accompanied by scapolite, quartz, calcite, molybdenite, rutile, sphene, and tourmaline; it is obvious that the mineralization was introduced into the basic rocks by emanations from underlying granites. This is the only known occurrence of primary uranium minerals in basic rocks. One of three known primary uranium ore minerals.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Radioactive Ores (Mining)
  • Mineralogy
CONT

Uranium minerals. More than 150 uranium-bearing minerals are known to exist, but only a few are common. The five primary uranium-ore minerals are pitchblende, uraninite, davidite, coffinite, and brannerite. These were formed by deep-seated hot solutions and are most commonly found in veins or pegmatites. The secondary uranium-ore minerals, altered from the primary minerals by weathering or other natural processes, are carnotite, tyuyamunite and metatyuyamunite..., torbernite and metatorbernite, autunite and meta-autunite, and uranophane.

CONT

Sandstone uranium deposits occur as disseminated uraniferous minerals, mainly as pore fillings, in arenaceous rocks, that are predominantly of continental origin in post-Silurian successor or foreland basins.

CONT
