Several methods have been proposed to remove space debris. Most of the proposed methods fall into two main categories, active and passive debris removal. Active space debris removal includes using a net, a robotic arm, or a built-in internal propulsion. The net method involves using a net to catch large and slow-moving debris. The robotic arm method has been proposed to capture failed or abandoned satellites in high orbits. The built-in internal propulsion method can be used to deorbit large satellites at high altitudes. At the end of the satellite's life, the internal propulsion system can fire and change the orbit to either descend rapidly into the Earth's atmosphere or into deep space. 1, record 1, English, - active%20space%20debris%20removal

Le retrait actif des débris. S'il semble pour le moment difficile d'agir en amont du lancement des objets spatiaux, un palliatif pourrait être de retirer les débris les plus dangereux déjà en orbite. Though mitigation policies are being put in place, it appears that the only sustainable solution would be to actively clean the near-Earth orbits. For the last decade, political, economic and legal obstacles have been slowing down the implementation of space debris removal.... Most of the objects are less than 1 cm(0. 39 inches) in diameter. This also includes dust from solid rocket motors, paint chips and other small debris that flaked from satellite systems. Many systems that include nets, large sails and other structures are only effective for objects that can be grasped and provide poor capture of on-orbit debris for subsequent de-orbit and, indeed, can be damaged by other impacts, contributing to the debris problem on orbit. 4, record 2, English, - space%20debris%20removal

2, record 2, French, - retrait%20des%20d%C3%A9bris%20spatiaux

The active debris removal(ADR) concept has continuously evolved for the debris removal from the LEO [low Earth orbit] region. One of the evolving ADR methods is space robotics which has continuously matured over a couple of decades. In space robotics, the satellite system consists of a robotic arm mounted over it which can be called a debris chaser satellite. The main function of the debris chaser satellite is to chase, capture and de-orbit the space junk to a very low earth orbit. 2, record 4, English, - chaser%20satellite

2, record 4, French, - satellite%20chasseur

This device is differentiated from the ubiquitous magnetic drain plug through the use of a unique self-closing valve, which permits the chip collector to be withdrawn without loss of lube or hydraulic oil. It is no longer necessary to wait until an oil change to assess the condition of critical gears and bearings. The chip collector can also be line-mounted, closer to the potential failure point, for fault isolation or even greater assurance of detecting a failure. 2, record 11, English, - chip%20detector

The project is named the Autonomous Space Processor for Orbital Debris(ASPOD) and is a NASA/Universities Space Research Association(USRA) sponsored design project. The development of ASPOD and the students’ abilities in designing and building a prototype spacecraft are the ultimate goals of this project. This year's focus entailed the development of a secondary robotic arm and end-effector to work in tandem with an existent arm in the removal of orbital debris. The new arm features the introduction of composite materials and a linear drive system, thus producing a light-weight and more accurate prototype. The main characteristic of the end-effector design is that it incorporates all of the motors and gearing internally, thus not subjecting them to the harsh space environment. Furthermore, the arm and the end-effector are automated by a control system with positional feedback. This system is composed of magnetic and optical encoders connected to a 486 PC via two servo-motor controller cards. Programming a series of basic routines and sub-routines has allowed the ASPOD prototype to become more autonomous. The new system is expected to perform specified tasks with a positional accuracy of 0. 5 cm. 2, record 15, English, - autonomous%20space%20processor%20for%20orbital%20debris

Prior to insertion of the liner pipe, the existing culvert must be cleaned of all debris either by flushing or manual removal. Any rust or spalls must be cleaned and removed as well as protrusions into the pipe. A jacking pit must be constructed with adequate size to contain lengths of pipe to be inserted, grouting equipment and any other equipment necessary to perform the insertion. The liner is normally pushed into the existing culvert, but occasionally it is pulled, or a combination of pulling and pushing is used. Due to the often large pressure load needed to push the last sections of a long or heavy liner into place, pulling may be the preferred method as long as adequate provisions have been made to avoid joint separation. 2, record 17, English, - insertion

First developed in France's Verdun Gorge in the mid 1970's sport climbing involves climbing a route that has been previously groomed, inspected and prepared(removal of moss, ferns and other debris from holes and cracks). The preparation involves rapelling down the cliff face and installing bolts or pitons in such a way that they will remain permanently, forever scarring the rock face. Given the minimal risk involved, the gymnastics of sport climbing takes precedence over the danger. Increasingly, the sport is performed on artificial climbing walls with removable bolts and pitons that, when arranged in a certain manner, allow for the instant creation of new, more difficult routes. The existence at these walls also lessen environmental damage to natural rock faces. 1, record 18, English, - sport%20climbing
