Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back. 3, record 5, English, - alligatoring

They belong to chains of successive decays, and all the species in one such chain constitute a radioactive family or series. ... One series has Uranium-238 ... as the parent substance and after 14 transformations, eight of them by alpha-particle emission ... and by beta-particle emission ..., reaches the stable end product Lead-206. This series is generally referred to as the uranium series. 6, record 8, English, - uranium%20decay%20series

Although the source ELSCI makes a slight distinction between "uranium series" and "uranium-radium series", defining the first as "The series of nuclides resulting from the decay of uranium-238" and defining the second as the "Radioactive decay series starting with U-238 and ending with the inactive lead isotope with mass number 206", it is the same in meaning. In addition, the source HACHE gives the two terms as true synonyms. 3, record 8, English, - uranium%20decay%20series

3, record 8, French, - famille%20de%20l%27uranium
