... a soil/duff drought index [developed by Keetch and Byram (1968]) that ranges from 0 (no drought) to 800 (extreme drought) and is based on soil capacity of 8 inches of water. Factors in the index are maximum daily temperature, daily precipitation, antecedent precipitation, and annual precipitation. 4, record 15, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The Keetch Byram Drought Index (KBDI) provides a daily measure of soil dryness, which, in turn, gives an indication of water stress in plants. The KBDI represents the net effect of precipitation and evapotranspiration in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff or upper soil layers. The KBDI has a range from 0 (no drought or soil moisture deficiency, i.e. soil at field capacity) to 2000 (extreme drought, maximum soil moisture deficiency possible). The index can be viewed as the amount of rain needed to bring the soil back to saturation, with one mm of rain reducing the index by 10 points. The 0-2000 point scale is divided into three drought classes: 0-999 = Low; 1000-1499 = Moderate; 1500 - 2000 = High. The KBDI is simple to calculate as it uses only two, daily weather observations - maximum temperature and 24-hour rainfall. The system functions in a book-keeping fashion where estimates of daily evapo-transpiration and measurements of precipitation increase or decrease the value of yesterdays index. The KBDI by itself is not a Fire Danger Rating System as it gives no indicate of the ease of ignition of the vegetation, or of the rate of fire spread, fire intensity and difficulty of control. It does however serve as a useful measure of drought occurrence. 7, record 15, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI): ... 0 - 200: Soil moisture and large class fuel moistures are high and do not contribute much to fire intensity. Typical of spring dormant season following winter precipitation. 200 - 400: Typical of late spring, early growing season. Lower litter and duff layers are drying and beginning to contribute to fire intensity. 400 - 600: Typical of late summer, early fall. Lower litter and duff layers actively contribute to fire intensity and will burn actively. 600 - 800: Often associated with more severe drought with increased wildfire occurrence. Intense, deep burning fires with significant downwind spotting can be expected. Live fuels can also be expected to burn actively at these levels. 9, record 15, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

Planned permanent placement of radioactive material with no intention of recovery. 7, record 16, English, - disposal
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Disposal is a permanent method of management in which there is no intention of retrieval and which, ideally, does not rely for its success on the continued need for institutional controls beyond a reasonable period of time. Disposal would be achieved when the wastes are sufficiently isolated by natural or engineered passive containment, or sufficiently reduced in concentration by radioactive decay or dispersal, that the residual risks to human beings and the environment are acceptable. 3, record 16, English, - disposal
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Permanent disposal means sequestering the wastes, until they have decayed to a safe level, away from the environment in a permanent facility requiring no monitoring, maintenance, or ongoing institutional controls.... One unfortunate aspect of the Board's adherence to this idea is the inhibiting effect it has on the search for simpler solutions, such as long-term storage, that concentrate on improved management of the wastes. 3, record 16, English, - disposal
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The debate essentially concerns the distinction between storage and disposal. "Storage" involves the retrievability, monitoring, and ongoing institutional control of wastes. It also includes active elements of waste management in such a waste facility (e.g., leachate collection and treatment). By contrast, the concept of disposal assumes that a waste management facility can be designed in such a way that there will be no need for such measures. 3, record 16, English, - disposal

Muskeg is a complex of wetland types that typically occur in cool, northern climates such as boreal forests. ...The colloquial, and widely misunderstood, term muskeg is used to refer to the complex mosaic of fens, bogs, swamps and pools, and scrubby forest that becomes increasingly common to the north ... Peatmoss is the common factor of muskeg and is where the term peatland is derived from. Pieces of herbs, shrubs and wood, such as buried tree branches, roots, or whole trees, can also make up a portion of the organic soil. Sphagnum moss is the mainstay of muskeg. It soaks up and holds several times its own weight in water. In the process, it keeps water from draining through the soil. 4, record 18, English, - muskeg

Secondary radionuclides are radiogenic isotopes derived from the decay of primordial radionuclides. They have shorter half-lives than primordial radionuclides. Infected roots of plants with corky root rot are distinctly corky. Extensive brown lesions, often arranged in bands with lengthwise cracking of the cortex, develop on the larger roots. The tips of infected older roots are pinched off. Small feeder roots may be completely decayed. Infected plants are stunted and slow growing. Branches on mature plants may die back from the tips. 3, record 24, English, - corky%20root%20disease

The distinction between the transient and permanent regime is essential : in particular, the "steady-state regime" must be understood as the regime that is reached asymptotically, long after transients have decayed(long time limit). Permanent regime can be simple, i. e., time-independent, time-periodic, or more complicated, i. e., quasi-periodic or even chaotic. The fundamental theoretical problem is then to "predict" the characteristics of the permanent regime reached by a given system as a function of available initial conditions and control parameters. 1, record 40, English, - permanent%20regime

1, record 40, French, - r%C3%A9gime%20permanent
