The practice of throwing a coin in the air to resolve a dispute between two parties or otherwise choose between two alternatives.

CONT

The actual NFL [National Football League] rule is that the team winning the coin toss elects whether to choose which team kicks off, or whether to choose which team defends which end, in the first quarter; the other team makes the other one of the two choices, and then makes the same election at the start of the third quarter.

OBS

The winner is the one who had chosen the side on top after the coin or the object comes to a rest. Depending on the rules of the game, he/she chooses to play first or second, serve or receive, use the right side or the left side of the court, etc.

CURLING. In curling, delivering first or second is decided by a coin toss; since delivering last in an end or in a game is an advantage, the winner of the coin toss usually chooses to deliver second.

The player who plays third for a curling team, delivers the third pair of rocks in an end and acts as skip when the skip is delivering.

A curling team or rink consists or four players, men or women: the skip, the third or vice-skip, the second and the lead. The skip is the main strategist: he "reads" the ice and calls the shots (with or without curl) from the other three curlers by indicating the target with his broom or brush; he throws the team’s last two shots in each end. The third helps the skip with the strategy and holds the brush or broom for him as a target; he throws the third pair of rocks per end and sweeps. The second throws the second pair of rocks per end and sweeps. The lead throws the team’s first two shots in each end and sweeps.

The intention of the Canadian Government in authorizing the formation of the Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment (CARDE) by Order-in-Council in 1945 was to preserve the main elements of the military technological complex which had been developed in Valcartier during the Second World War. In reality, it gave way to more than 60 years of major technological discoveries in Defense science.

DRDC Valcarter is a major Canadian military research station in Quebec, one of seven centres making up Defence Research and Development Canada(DRDC). Originally formed at the end of World War II in 1945 as the Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment(CARDE), the intent was to keep the research teams built up during the war in Canada, as opposed to moving to the United States. Starting in 1951 CARDE implemented a major missile development program, eventually delivering two combat systems, the Velvet Glove air-to-air missile and the Heller anti-tank rocket. Neither was accepted for production, but the basic research was used with local defence contractors to build up familiarity with the new technologies.

Suitcase Simulators are EXPRESS Rack provided portable units to be used at a payload developer's site to support their software development and to verify data interfaces between the payload and the EXPRESS Rack. The suitcase simulator is composed of a computer with cards and software to simulate the EXPRESS Rack and data. Cables and a laptop are provided for a payload to do an end to end communication check prior to delivering the payload to the integration site. Suitcase simulators are provided and distributed to payload developers based on their flight dates and developmental stage.
