This report outlines from Canadian subject matter experts(SMEs) on the current state of transportation ergonomics and its implication for future research directives in Canada. Provided in the report are a working definition of transportation ergonomics and a conceptual framework for the development of a strategic plan to prioritize areas where research should be focused. Information on transportation ergonomics was gathered through a review of TDC projects, national and international literature, and SMEs’ responses to a questionnaire. Issues were identified which affect the development and delivery of transportation systems within Canada. A four-point plan was developed as a framework for TDC to enhance the delivery of transportation ergonomics in Canada. Smoke Measurement... It has been known for many years that the tar yield of any brand of cigarette does not necessarily correspond with the tar delivery of that cigarette to a human smoker. As the Fourth Report of the ISCSH observed :"These parameters have been criticised as not reflecting average human behaviour and leading to published yields universally under-estimating yields actually obtained by the average smoker. British Executive Agencies. A good deal of the current Canadian thinking about alternative service delivery appears to be based on the British experience of Executive Agencies over the past decade. Briefly the British have moved over 70% of their civil service into arms-length agencies whose heads("chief executives") report to ministers rather than permanent secretaries.
