"Pre-stressing" is a term used to describe actions taken to encourage wildlife to move away from a site prior to the onset of construction. Common methods of pre-stressing include having one or more people walk the site while talking loudly or playing loud music, or placing pieces of cloth or other objects that carry a strong human scent into animal dens.

While satellite tracking is particularly useful for avian species, Environment Canada scientists have also used satellite collars on female polar bears and their cubs since 1996 to delineate the population and determine how mothers select their dens.

Evaluate effectiveness of releasing Wyoming foxes captured in the fall, quarantined and released in the fall. This technique would allow a shorter quarantine period, allow foxes to breed the following spring, and allow double use of quarantine facilities, once in the fall and once during winter. Reliable evaluation of this technique can be achieved using radio collars and aerial and ground monitoring to assess survival. Remote monitoring using satellite collars may also be appropriate.

We performed five transfers of the ipsilateral fibula in the treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia. In all cases, conventional treatment by intramedullary-rod and autogenous-iliac bone grafting had failed at least once. We hoped to avoid the use of contralateralfibular grafting or other methods that have not yet been proven effective. The ipsilateral fibula was transferred, and its vascular pedicle left intact and secured to both fragments of the tibial pseudarthrosis by cerclage wires. All five transfers have united and hypertrophied with growth. We believe this salvage method is superior to others not only because of the successful results, but also because the intact limb is left undisturbed.
