A software program developed by the National DNA Data Bank that integrates the automated process of DNA analysis.

The STaCS system tracks, controls and documents all the samples and processes used to convert biological samples (blood, buccal or hair) from convicted offenders into simplified numeric DNA profiles. These profiles can then be matched against DNA profiles generated from samples found at crime scenes.

A tool is under way to catalogue genetic variations among single DNA bases, known as single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs, pronounced "snips"), which can be used in characterizing drug responses. The National Institutes of Health has launched a $36-million, three-year program to collect data on 50, 000 to 100, 000 SNPs, a new goal for its Human Genome Project.

The Nass Skeena Transition is an area located in British Columbia(BC), Canada, where a large introgression zone occurs between Sitka spruce... and interior spruce(white spruce, Picea glaucaa Moench) Voss M Engelmann spruce, Picea engelmannii Parry ex. Engelm.). When these species hybridize in this transition area, forestry programs face special problems in identifying seedlots that have the desired genetic makeup of source material collected from traditional seed zones. This paper presents an overview of a program that combined the disciplines of molecular genetics and ecophysiology to assist in defining the genetic makeup of seedlots based on DNA analysis results.

A computer program, which runs on MS-DOS personal computers, is described that assists in the design of synthetic genes coding for proteins. The goal of the program is the design of a gene which(i) contains as many unique restriction sites as possible and(ii) uses a specific codon usage. The gene designed according to the criteria above is(i) suitable for ’modular mutagenesis’ experiments and(ii) optimized for expression. The program ’reverse-translates’ protein sequences into degenerated DNA sequences, generates a map of potential restriction sites and locates sequence positions where unique restriction sites can be accommodated. The nucleic acid sequence is then ’refined’ according to a specific codon usage to remove any degeneration. Unique restriction sites, if potentially present, can be ’forced’ into the degenerated nucleic acid sequence by using ’priority codes’ assigned to different restriction sequences.
