On the western shores of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, damaging local winds are known as Les Suetes, derived from the word for southeast: sud est. These southeasterlies are created when a frontal inversion causes a funnelling effect over the Cape Breton mountains. As the winds rush down the side of the highlands, strong gusts develop which have been recorded to exceed 150 km/h (94 mph).

CONT

What are Les Suetes winds? The prevailing wind direction in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Highlands is westerly, but for a few weeks of the year strong southeast winds, known locally as "Les Suetes, "(from the French "sud est") blow across northern Cape Breton's open plateau and then crash down the western side of the mountains. The strongest gusts can reach 200 km/h.

CONT

Suêtes are hurricane force south-east winds that beat down on the Acadian French coastal area of northwestern Cape Breton Island, in the eastern Canadian Province of Nova Scotia, Canada in the spring and autumn.

CONT

Les Suetes winds on Cape Breton Island blew just shy of 120 km/h.

OBS

"Les Suêtes" ... is derived from a corruption of the French pronunciation of Southeast, "Sud est."

Gouging electrodes without the use of an Air Arc.

OBS

MMA gouging [Manual Metal Arc Gouging] is used for localised gouging operations, removal of defects for example, and where it is more convenient to switch from a welding electrode to a gouging electrode rather than use specialised equipment.

OBS

Air carbon arc gouging works as follows. An electric arc is generated between the tip of a carbon electrode and the workpiece. The metal becomes molten and a high velocity air jet streams down the electrode to blow it away, thus leaving a clean groove.

DEF

outflow winds: ... dry winds that develop and flow out of the interior of the province [usually the British Columbia] and funnel through steep-sided inlets on the mainland coast before heading for [the sea].

CONT

Outflow winds occur when differing air masses are separated by a coastal mountain barrier. In extreme cases the cross-barrier pressure gradient and the high degree of stratification (often approaching a distinct layered structure) result in channel winds which exhibit hydraulic features.

CONT

Outflow winds [are] winds that blow down fjords and inlets from the land to the sea.

CONT

Strong outflow winds are forecast for coastal regions today. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

CONT

Conditions resulting from outflow bring cold temperatures to the coastal fiords. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

The name sounds romantic and oddly soothing : meltemi. But the reality is that this dry wind blowing from the north can sweep across Greek waters, swamping small craft, challenging ferries, and shutting down hydrofoils. It also can churn the waters, making them dangerous for swimmers, and blow sand at sunbathers on north-facing beaches.

CONT

We are on Aegean cost of Turkey and we profit from these exceptional weather conditions; like 6 months of blue sky, warm sun, a climate without dampness and the good wind called Meltemi.

CONT

The Meltemi wind was known by the old Greeks as the Etesian northern winds, and results from a high pressure system (>1025) lying over the Balkan/Hungary area and a relatively low pressure (<1010) system over Turkey.

OBS

The old name of the Meltemia was the Etesian winds. Mythologically, they are under the control of Boreas, the god of the North Winds.

OBS

The Etesian or Meltemi (Turkish name) is an extension of a monsoon. It is strongest in the afternoon and weakens during the night.

In partnership with the Alberta Oilsands Technical Authority(AOSTRA) in 1979 the pressure cycle steam drive system was developed. This process takes advantage of a basal water zone, which underlies the oil sands in this area, to heat the oil sands deposit from below. Once a hot communication path is established between wells, continuous steam injection is begun, with the injection and production rates controlled to alternately pressure up and blow down the reservoir.

Once backpressure was put on the formation, it shut the production down. In our particular case, one of the reasons it did was that we had low formation pressure. ... another possible way of creating permeability in hot dry rocks is «impact fracturing». This method... [may be described in its principle. ] A bore, cased except near the lower extremity, is surmounted by a hydraulic accumulator, filled with water and pressurized by means of a pump until the accumulator weight is lifted. The lifting pressure should be perhaps about 90% of the estimated hydro-fracturing pressure. A dynamic blow would then be struck upon the top of the water column by means of some device resembling a pile-driver, so that shock waves would travel to the base of the bore and be reflected up and down at attenuating intensity. Very high instantaneous pressures would be generated which would fracture the rock, and it is expected that the steepness of the pressure rise would be such as to resemble explosive action, so that the «star» formation... would be produced.

When the wrist is held in the neutral position, a moderate blow can be applied to the palm of the hand without causing pain and discomfort. When the wrist is in the neutral position, it can absorb the force best. However, if the blow is applied to the wrist when it is fully extended up or down, the wrist is a poor shock absorber, and is most vulnerable to stress and injury.

High-Consistency System. Figure 11-18 shows a representative system where pulp is handled in the 25% to 28% consistency range. Typically, a press is used to raise the feed consistency to about 30%. Fresh caustic or oxidized white liquor along with the magnesium protector is added to the pulp at the discharge of the press. A thick stock pump then transfers the pulp to a fluffer via a feed pipe in which a gas-tight plug is formed. The fluffed pulp flows down the pressurized reactor as a loose bed, while gaseous oxygen is continuously dissolved into the liquid phase and reacted with the pulp.... Oxygen gas is added to either top or bottom to maintain a partial pressure within the 90 to 130 psi range. Relief is taken from the head space at the top of the tower to remove combustibles and other noncondensible gases, and control overall reactor pressure. At the bottom of the tower, the reacted pulp is diluted with post-oxygen filtrate and pumped at about 6% consistency to a blow tank.
