  • Scientific Research Equipment
  • Insects, Centipedes, Spiders, and Scorpions
CONT

To attach the specimen to the point you will need to place the specimen on a piece on a foam board on its back with its head facing towards you. Take the point and turn it upside down so that the pin point is in your fingertips, dip the tip of the point into a small amount of glue, then gently place the tip of the point onto the beetle underside between the mid-and hind legs …

CONT

... for the preparation of smaller specimens (12 mm or smaller), the traditional method is to prepare specimens ... by gluing them on oblong or triangular cards (points) and in turn pinning the cards on standard entomological pins.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

Gyrocompass... as the Earth rotates, the north end of the gyro rotor tilts upward. The ensuing dip angle results in a pendulum torque, down at the south end and up at the north end of the rotor axis. This torque causes the north end of the gyro axis to precess westward. As soon as the gyro axis passes through the north-south meridian, the action reverses.

DEF

A roughly cylindrical distribution of uranium mineralization occurring usually in the Salt Wash sandstone.

CONT

This uranium would migrate through the basin of deposition to be lost in the sea unless it came into contact with reducing conditions in the organic-rich sediment a short distance beneath the sediment-water interface... The interface, or redox boundary, between the oxidized and reduced rocks has, in cross-section, the shape of a crudely crescentic envelope or roll, the leading edge of which cuts across the host strata... and points down dip towards reduced ground that still contains authigenic iron disulphides.

Domaine(s)
  • Minerais radioactifs (Mines métalliques)
CONT
