Subject field(s)

  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

Different disposal modules are used in some places for specific purposes. Pits are used for disposal of bulky, non-compactible wastes such as tanks, piping and large items of equipment. As the pit is filled, the disposed wastes are backfilled and covered with soil or concrete. Other disposal modules, such as lined shallow wells and shafts, may be provided with engineered barriers ....

CONT

The concept [burying the waste deep underground in the Canadian Shield] isolates used fuel from the environment using a series of natural as well as manmade barriers. Used nuclear fuel bundles would be contained in vaults 500 to 1,000 metres below ground. These vaults would consist of a network of tunnels and disposal rooms about 2 kilometres by 2 kilometres that could hold 191,000 tonnes of used fuel.

CONT

Typically, each [shallow land burial] trench has a sloping floor cut into the natural soil and a French drain of gravel down one of the long sides. The trench bottom is covered with a foot or two of sand to allow water to flow freely into the French drain, especially when the trench is open during operations. Sampling pipes or tubes are placed against the trench wall, with their lower ends in the French drain, when the trench is dug. Monitoring of each disposal unit(engineered trench) is accomplished by sampling any water found in the French drain through these tubes and analyzing its contents.

CONT

... the aboveground vault is a large steel-reinforced concrete structure with vertical access (through an open top) for placement of the waste. Within each structure there are numerous disposal units. Each disposal unit is sealed when filled to capacity. Individual units are sized to accommodate waste deliveries for about 1 to 2 weeks.

CONT

CONT

DEF

Back vent. A pipe or system of pipes connected to the drainage pipes of a plumbing system for the purpose of supplying or removing air to relieve pressures above or below atmospheric. A back vent is that part of a vent line which connects directly with an individual trap beneath or behind a fixture and extends to a branch or main soil or waste pipe at any point higher than the fixture or fixture trap it serves.

DEF

Anti-siphonage pipe. An air pipe in a plumbing system which admits air downstream of a water seal in a w. c., sink or washbasin, thus preventing the creation of a vacuum in the wake of water flushed down the drain and avoiding the breakage of the seal which such a vacuum could cause. The top of an anti-siphonage pipe may be connected to a ventilation pipe.

DEF

Vent pipe. Any small pipe extending from any of the various plumbing fixtures in a structure to the vent stack.

DEF

Ventilation secondaire.

CONT

Monitoring wells should effectively achieve one or more of the following objectives: Provide access to the groundwater system for collection of water samples ... Measure the hydraulic head at a specific location in the groundwater flow system ... Provide access for conducting tests or collecting information necessary to characterize the aquifer materials or their hydrologic properties.

OBS

Figure 6. 1 illustrates a typical open disposal trench at the Barnwell facility. The trench floor is sloped slightly and covered with a layer of sand to facilitate collection of percolating water in a French drain. A number of pipes allow any water that may collect in the French drain to be removed and analyzed. Presently waste, primarily in boxes, drums and cask liners, is stacked neatly in the trench... As the level of the waste reaches the design level, 2 m below grade, a layer of dry soil is added and allowed to filter down between the waste containers. When a trench is filled, it is covered with a cap of at least 0. 6 m of compacted native clay, followed by at least 0. 9 m of soil. The cap is graded to shed water and seeded with grass. The sump in each trench is monitored for at least 5 years and any subsidence in the cap is filled to maintain its water-shedding ability. Monitoring wells at the perimeter of the facility have not detected migration of nuclides after more than 15 years of operation.

[a] software designed to develop the user’s awareness.

CONT

But is it possible to improve on the mental processes that go into the creative thought writing represents? Some people say it is a theory that has prompted the development of an emerging genre of software called idea processors. There are several packages available for micros and minis that improve writing efficiency, cut down on brain drain, improve research capability and help harness the incredible energy of brainstorms.

CONT

Mindware is microcomputer-based software that extends and enhances a user’s thought processes. Fine mindware products are reviewed: Living Videotext’s Thinktank, Softpath System’s Brainstormer, Fastware’s Thor, Idea Ware, The Idea Processor and Maxthink’s Maxthink.

CONT

The downspout takes the water from the gutter and down to the drainage pipe or splash block on the ground... If your downspout drains into an underground drain pipe, it is wise to use some kind of stainer in the eavestrough to prevent debris from clogging the underground pipe. If you do not use underground drainage, use a piece of downspout and an elbow to direct the water away from the house and dump onto a splash block.

CONT

Rain and melted snow on the roof are collected by the eavestroughs and channeled to the ground by downspouts. These downspouts are then connected to an extension pipe or splash pad which carries the rainwater away from the house, ensuring that it does not soak into the ground close to your house.

CONT

The condenser is also a Model no. 06036 shell and tube exchanger, identical to the reboiler with a few modifications : The baffles have been cut at the bottom where they meet the shell to allow condensate to flow out of the shell. The tube side has four passes for maximum heat transfer on the tube side. It is mounted nearly horizontally. The inlet end is a couple of inches higher than the outlet to allow condensate to drain out the low end. A few tubes have been removed at the top to give the vapor more room to distribute itself along the length of the shell. There is a vent on the shell side near the outlet end to allow non-condensable gases to leave. The vent gases pass through the inside of a 36" double pipe condenser so that any condensable gasses will condense out and run down the walls back into the condenser.

Join the volunteers who are painting yellow fish symbols beside sewers with local municipal approval. They also distribute fish-shaped brochures to remind people to dispose of household hazardous wastes in an environmentally-sound way. Each year, Canadians dump 300 million litres of used motor oil into the environment, with "down the storm drain" being one possible route of contamination. Most water that runs down the storm drains will flow directly into nearby creeks, rivers and lakes. The water goes down the storm drains ends up being the next town's drinking water. People may not realize that by using storm drains as "handy" places to dump unwanted household hazardous products, they are polluting the water. Responsibly disposing of household chemicals and automotive and lawn care products protects both our environment and our health. To date, the program has been approved by over 130 municipalities in Ontario. Since 1993, over a quarter of a million households in Ontario have been reached by the program.
