Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 3, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain(locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point--past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids--for prospectors heading for Dawson(then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years(1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. Though the mines shut down in Yukon and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ended its operations 2, record 11, English, - Whitehorse

Found in Wales and Scotland, in England where it borders those two, and in the area around Omagh, Northern Ireland, the Old Red Sandstone is a huge set of sedimentary rocks(primarily brown and red, giving it its name) dating to the Devonian. It is a marine formation, having been laid down from 408 to 370 million years ago as earlier Silurian rocks uplifted by the formation of Pangaea eroded and slid into a body of fresh water(probably a series of large river deltas). They are extremely thick, up to 11, 000 meters in places, and can be subdivided into three categories "Lower", "Middle", and "Upper" from oldest to youngest. As a result, the Old Red Sandstone is a rich source of marine fossils. 4, record 16, English, - Old%20Red%20Sandstone

... sixteen cross-sections at three longitudinally-separated reaches were examined. At each cross-section the height on the banks of the river where the vegetation changed to bare substrate was measured. HEC-RAS modelling was also conducted for each cross-section in order to determine the volume of daily flow associated with the height of the vegetation on the river-banks. Flow duration curves were constructed for each reach, from which the percentage of time that flow within the channel would reach the height on the banks of each vegetation limit was determined. This showed that, at the majority of cross-sections, the vegetation limits were associated with much higher flows than the low flow. This may be because a range of other processes are acting to prevent the growth of terrestrial vegetation lower down on the banks. 5, record 28, English, - vegetation%20limit

The major problem with the discharge of pollutants in rivers is that a number of chemicals might not flush directly downstream but some might sediment parts of the river to be later resuspended and moved downstream. It can be hypothesized that streams are spiralling or cascading systems in which the retention in which the retention time and efficiency of resources utilization are maximized through control by specialized functional groups down the stream continuum.... spiralling is a beneficial mechanism in rivers since it helps to maintain an ecological balance in the stream following perturbations but it also helps to increase the damage made by uncontrolled spills of contaminants. 1, record 32, English, - spiralling
