Subject field(s)
  • Sentencing
  • Penal Administration
CONT

What is a concurrent sentence? Concurrent sentences are sentences imposed for separate offences which run at the same time. A concurrent sentence begins from the date it is imposed. Where concurrent sentences are imposed at the same time, the total time served by the offender for all the offences is the same as the longest individual sentence imposed. For example, when a court hands down on the same day concurrent sentences of 3 and 5 years, the total time to be served is 5 years. Concurrent sentences include sentences with clear direction from the court that the sentence is to be served "concurrently" and when no direction is given by the court, i. e., sentence is "silent. "

CONT

Example of an original single sentence merged with a concurrent sentence: Suppose that an offender is subject to a 3 year sentence which began on March 1, 2012. Two years later (March 1, 2014) they receive a 3 year sentence to be served concurrently with the first. The two sentences are combined to form a total sentence of 5 years which begins on March 1, 2012 (the start date of the first of the sentences to be served), and ends on February 28, 2017 (the expiration date of the last of the sentences to be served). In this case, the sentences run at the same time.

  • Peines
  • Administration pénitentiaire
CONT

CONT

Paragliders have no rigid structure and are kept in shape by the internal pressure of air, with the pilot suspended by lines beneath. The pilot is clipped into a harness and oriented in a sitting position for maximum comfort. After laying out the wing and lines, launching is simply a matter of moving down the slope a few steps to tension the lines and allow the wind to inflate the wing and raise it above you. A short run forward to pick up airspeed and you’re airborne!

CONT

Paraglider pilots launch from gentle hillsides with their gliders already opened for flight; if the glider isn’t flying properly, the launch can be aborted before leaving the ground. Paragliding launches are not as "committing"; if you want to stop your launch, you just stop running and the canopy floats down behind you. The pilot runs down a gentle slope and glides away from the mountain.

CONT

The take-off, contrary to popular belief, does not involve a leap off a cliff, all you have to do is run a few steps to be airborne.

Il faut qu'il y ait une légère brise qui remonte la pente face à lui pour lui faciliter le décollage et que les conditions météorologiques soient adaptées.

CONT

Le décollage dépend aussi des conditions aérologiques et de la structure du relief choisi. On ne saute pas, on ne se jette pas, on décolle et un décollage est rapide lorsqu'il y a un peu de vent de face, et nécessite un peu plus de temps et de course d'élan lorsque le vent est faible ou nul.

A powerful shot used on a high return, and ... hit from above the head, like a serve.

OBS

Usage: strictly speaking the term "overhead" is a generic, i.e. it denotes any stroke, usually - but not always - a smash, executed like a serve by raising the racket above the head and swinging down hard. Some journalists are guided by this rule of thumb, however unreliable it may be: "If it is a hard stroke, use the term "smash" if it is a defensive stroke, use "overhead". However, the term "smash" more often than not can only denote the actual stroke, and not the result of the stroke, whereas the term "overhead" can denote either the stroke or the result. Consider the following phrases: "He frequently dumps overheads (and not: "to dump a smash") into the net; he hit a short overhead (and not: to hit a short smash).

Sa technique rappelle celle du service, à ceci près qu'il se réalise souvent beaucoup plus près du filet avec des ouvertures d'angle d'autant plus grandes. Un smash réussi termine généralement le point.

CONT

Les joueurs utilisent généralement le smash sur un retour très haut. Ce coup est frappé au-dessus de la tête comme pour le service.

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

Touch football derives its name from the fact that touching(tagging) the ballcarrier rather than tackling him is the method used to stop his advancement. This is a passing game rather than a kicking game... variations still exist with respect to number of players [from 6 to 11 players or more], distances to be gained for a first down [local rules may specify 20 yards], total number of downs [on a small field a team may be permitted 5 downs] and length of game [agreed to beforehand by the teams involved].... A ballcarrier is considered downed when he is touched--that is, when one or both hands of the defending player tag him, usually above the waist. A procedural network for a skill is a decomposition of that skill into subprocedures which are linked together in a lattice of subgoals. The links stand for the procedure-calling relation, down to a set of primitive actions. A procedural network is executable, and can thus be run on a set of problems to model the skill that it represents. Its structure is also inspectable in that, unlike a flat set of rules, it uses well-defined subprocedure calls.
