Subject field(s)
  • Pollution (General)
CONT

... some substances are not being released into the environment in an easily defined way like from a pipe. Instead, they may be released into the environment because they end up in a landfill, and ultimately break down, and then enter a wastewater stream. The words "medium indicative of release to the environment" apply to something like that wastewater stream. Take for example a substance that is present in a consumer product and is released when the product is used or as the product degrades.... As the product containing the substance is used, traces of the substance may end up in municipal wastewater effluent. The presence of the substance in wastewater effluent is then indicative of its release into the environment.

DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

CONT

The rotary dryer, sometimes known as a rotary kiln, is a type of industrial dryer employed to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into direct contact with heated gas. The dryer is made up of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by concrete columns or steel beams. The dryer slopes slightly so that the discharge end is lower than the material feed end in order to convey the material through the dryer under gravity. Material to be dried enters the higher end of the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough to roll back off the fins, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot air stream as it falls.

To go and especially to rise or fall in a spiral course.

CONT

With the absence of closed recycling loops in streams, one mechanism for controlling nutrient and energy losses via hydrologic transport is through regulation of outflow losses by stream biota. Nutrients and energy are released at one point in a stream become available as resources(i. e. stabilized inputs) at points further down the topographic gradient. Thus, resources are successfully "spiraled" down the stream rather than "recycled" in place.... thus, it can be hypothesized that streams are "spiralling" or cascading systems in which the retention time and efficiency of resources utilization are maximized through control by specialized functional groups down the stream continuum.

CONT

Toxic contaminants are also "spiraled" down the stream and their effects might last significantly longer in the stream ecosystem than if they were just transported downstream with the water.

Because winds spiral anticlockwise into these cells the net transport of water is outward.

D'autres expressions pourraient peut-être aussi être utilisées : «se déplacer spiralement"»(le long du cours d'eau), à partir de l'adverbe «spiralement» défini ainsi dans le Grand Robert : En spirale. When you use the same file over and over again, writing, rewriting, saving, and deleting parts of it on the same disk, the file becomes fragmented. That means that although you can’t tell, your operating system is storing all the data from that file as separate packages of information, distributed on different parts of the disk. Although fragmentation does not lose the information contained in the file, it does eventually slow down access to the file itself, because the OS must search the whole disk to create the sum of the file's parts. The Earth's magnetic field presents an obstacle to the solar wind, as a rock in a running stream of water. This obstacle is called a bow shock. The bow shock slows down, heats, and compresses the solar wind, which then flows around the rest of Earth's magnetic field.

CONT

The solar wind is ejected from the Sun at tremendous velocities, and as it approaches the Earth, its momentum compresses the outward extension of the geomagnetic field on the dayside of the Earth and greatly elongates it on the nightside to form the magnetosphere. At a certain distance "upstream" from Earth, the incoming solar wind flow is slowed and deflected by the dayside geomagnetic field, forming a supersonic shock wave located in front of the magnetosphere. This shock wave is known as the bow shock because of its similarity to the wave at the bow of a moving ship.

Westerly jet stream of maximum intensity near the stratopause, in the middle and subpolar latitudes of the winter hemisphere, caused by prolonged radiative cooling of the air in high latitudes during this season.

CONT

Polar-night jet stream. This jet meanders through the upper stratosphere over the poles. It occurs only during the long winter night. Remember, night is 6 months long over the pole in which winter is occurring. The polar stratosphere undergoes appreciable cooling due to the lack of solar radiation. The horizontal temperature gradient is strongly established between the equator and the pole, and the pressure gradient creates this westerly jet. The temperature gradient breaks down intermittently during middle and late winter in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, the jet is intermittent at these times. In the Southern Hemisphere the temperature gradient and jet disappear rather abruptly near the time of the spring equinox.

CONT

The expert will focus upon the potential impact of proposed flow regimes on the water balance of certain coastal plant communities and on down stream breakup timing and characteristics.

OBS

Tank into which ore pulp is fed steadily and subjected to the sorting of a stream of hydraulic water which rises at controlled rate. Heavier or coarser equal settling particles gravitate down and away via a bottom discharge, while lighter ones are carried up and out.

OBS

To scalp: to screen or sift (as grain, meal, or ore) in order to remove foreign materials or to separate out coarser grades.

DEF

Subject field(s)

  • Water Pollution
CONT

The major problem with the discharge of pollutants in rivers is that a number of chemicals might not flush directly downstream but some might sediment parts of the river to be later resuspended and moved downstream. It can be hypothesized that streams are spiralling or cascading systems in which the retention in which the retention time and efficiency of resources utilization are maximized through control by specialized functional groups down the stream continuum.... spiralling is a beneficial mechanism in rivers since it helps to maintain an ecological balance in the stream following perturbations but it also helps to increase the damage made by uncontrolled spills of contaminants.

OBS

OBS

"spiraloïde" : En forme de spirale. [Ex. :] Mouvement spiraloïde.
