Subject field(s)
  • Paddle Sports
CONT

Canoe/kayak slalom began to develop about six years after the first international canoe/kayak federation was founded in 1924. The sport got its start in Switzerland, modeled after alpine skiing. Just as skiers in slalom races have to maneuver through gates, so would canoers/kayakers as their boats travelled down whitewater rapids.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
DEF

The drilling method by which a hole is drilled by a rotating bit to which a downward force is applied.

CONT

During the last 40 years, rotary drilling has become the preferred method for penetrating underground formations... a special tool-the drill bit-rotates while bearing down on the bottom of the well, thus gouging and chipping its way downward... The drill bit is connected to the surface equipment through a drill pipe, a heavy-walled tubing through which the drilling mud is fed to the bottom of the bore hole. In most cases, the drill pipe also transmits the rotation motion from a turntable at the surface to the bit at the bottom of the hole.

OBS

[In this method] the bit is fastened to and rotated by the drill stem, which also provides a passageway through which the drilling fluid is circulated.

OBS

Rotary drilling was first used in 1901 in the Spindle Top field near Beaumont, Texas, but it was not until the 1920’s that this method became the most common one.

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
DEF

OBS

sondage rotatif : Le terme figure à la rubrique «trépan» dans Grand Larousse encyclopédique (source LGRAN).

  • Forage Crops
  • Cattle Raising
OBS

For the last three or so years a variant of strip grazing called block grazing has been used with both cows and sheep particularly when going through the winter using a slow rotation. Obviously if the length of rotation is say 40 days; then extra subdivision is needed since the average number of permanent paddocks on most dairy farms is only about 15-20. The extra subdivision is accomplished by using electric fences, but the main feature of the block grazing system is that the areas should be as square as possible. This discourages the cows from aimless walking up and down the fence line which does occur with along narrow strip, and so reduces trampling damage and waste of grass. p. 214, Pastures & Pasture Plants 1973.
