An analytical solution is one that can be explicitly written down, also called a closed form solution. Analytical solutions can not be found for many partial differential and ordinary differential equations(most in fact). In the case when an analytical solution has not been found yet, numerical methods may be applied to get an approximate solution. For instance a well known equation with an analytical solution is the wave equation. On the other hand, a well known equation that doesn’t have an analytical solution is the Navier-Stokes equation. 3, record 6, English, - analytical%20solution

On the beach the top of the wave breaks and mingles with the foot of the wave, both dashing forward with a force driven by the energy from the height and speed of the collapsing wave. The resulting rush of water is fast and strong and moves sand effortlessly up the beach. The water then comes to a rest as the sand particles settle out. The water then begins flowing back down the beach, first slowly and then faster until it dislodges cohesive sand grains. But the forcing power is much less than that of the on-rushing waves. The particles that settled at the top of the forward rush, stay because of the hysteresis(lagging behind) between erosion speed and settling speed... 3, record 9, English, - hysteresis

The... ice laboratory is a versatile ice modelling facility which has been used to study numerous ice related problems. The staff has developed international recognition for their work in modelling ice and ice problems. The temperature inside the chamber can be varied down to-20°C. It houses a concrete tank which is 21 m long by 7 m wide by 1. 1 m deep. Ice up to 0. 6 m thick can be grown in this tank. The ice tank is used for many types of studies, including model tests of ice-structure interaction using model ice. The tank can accommodate a wave machine, producing a wave climate in different ice regimes. Recently, the tank has also been used to investigate the effects of ice scouring seabed material. 3, record 12, English, - ice%2Dstructure%20interaction%20using%20model%20ice

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it's duration and fetch.... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars(lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot's law states :"If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left. "From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 20, English, - wave%20generation%20area

A new device, developed in Norway, harnesses energy from the ocean waves using a vertically oscillating float connected to a piston pump. Possible applications range from desalination of seawater and clean water supply to fish farms, to electricity production using a turbo-generator. This wave energy conversion unit is being developed by the Norwegian company ConWEC AS... The ConWEC device absorbs wave energy by means of a float which oscillates up and down inside a cylindrical structure with a submerged opening through which waves can act. The energy in the waves is converted to mechanical energy by a pump with its piston rigidly connected to the float. Seawater can be pumped into an energy storage in the form of a pressure tank(or possibly an elevated water reservoir) from which a turbine can be run to complete the conversion to electrical energy. 2, record 22, English, - oscillating%20float

(ESWL) works in something like a high-tech Ribe Goldberg sequence. The patient, usually anesthetized from the waist down to obliterate the mild discomfort of the shocks, is strapped onto a pallet and lowered into a specially designed tub full of water. X-rays reveal the precise location of the kidney stone on two television monitors. The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates. 6, record 23, English, - extracorporeal%20shock%20wave%20lithotripter

Mokume-Ji : A Japanese metal art which produces a ground resembling grained wood. In this process several thin metal plates are beaten together. The plate is then punched from one side so that the opposite side resembles broken blisters. These blisters are hammered down until each produces its own wave effect. Although iron was generally used, the finest work was in shakudo with a gold graining. 3, record 28, English, - mokume%20gane
