On the western shores of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, damaging local winds are known as Les Suetes, derived from the word for southeast: sud est. These southeasterlies are created when a frontal inversion causes a funnelling effect over the Cape Breton mountains. As the winds rush down the side of the highlands, strong gusts develop which have been recorded to exceed 150 km/h (94 mph). 5, record 3, English, - Su%C3%AAtes
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
What are Les Suetes winds? The prevailing wind direction in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Highlands is westerly, but for a few weeks of the year strong southeast winds, known locally as "Les Suetes, "(from the French "sud est") blow across northern Cape Breton's open plateau and then crash down the western side of the mountains. The strongest gusts can reach 200 km/h. 6, record 3, English, - Su%C3%AAtes

The north westerlies of summer force humid air to rise against the western mountains, causing heavy rain in the west... As the air sinks down on the eastern side of the mountains, it warms and the clouds quite often disperse. This is called the foehn effect and in summer it brings a hot, dry and very trying wind for a while to the Canterbury Plains inland of Christchurch. Then the wind becomes a southerly and for the rest of the year it brings cooler fresher air. 5, record 4, English, - foehn%20effect

1, record 4, Spanish, - efecto%20foehn
