A method of drilling past obstructions in a well, i.e. lost tools, pipe or other material blocking the hole. 3, record 1, English, - sidetracking
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
[Sidetracking] can be done with the use of a whipstock, a down-hole tool which forces the drill bit to drill at a slight angle from the vertical. By beginning the deviation of the hole several hundred feet around the junk in the original hole, the new hole will bypass the obstruction and may be taken on down to the pay zone. 3, record 1, English, - sidetracking
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Sidetracking is also done to deepen a well or to relocate the bottom of the well in a more productive zone, which is horizontally removed from the original well. 4, record 1, English, - sidetracking

Down-hole percussive drills... consist primarily of a string of drill rods attached to a percussion drill bit at the bottom of the hole. However, instead of the mechanical energy being transmitted to the bit from the surface of the hole via the entire string of rods, the power unit is located "down the hole" immediately above the bit, thus eliminating energy loss through friction of the drill string against the shaft walls and through the threaded connections of the drill rods. 1, record 2, English, - down%2Dthe%2Dhole%20percussion%20drill

1, record 2, French, - marteau%20fond%20de%20trou
