Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

"shutter weir". A movable weir consisting of a row of large panels hinged at the bottom and inclined slightly downstream toward the top when the weir is closed.

CONT

Shutter-Dams.... The first dam constructed by movable shutters was probably the one across the river Orb(France).... This dam was raised 3 feet by movable wooden shutters hinged to the top of the dam and held by props placed on their down-stream side. The sluice-openings were closed by stop-planks(poutrelles) placed horizontally, one on top of another and attached to each other by chains.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

Hydrological Data Collection. In order to model the hydrology of a stream study segment over a range of flow rates, it is necessary to collect specific data defining the hydraulic boundary conditions. Boundary conditions define the target hydraulic simulation output, i. e. the desired flow rate, velocity and water surface elevation at the up-stream and down-stream ends of the segment. Hydraulic boundary are typically defined by flow rate, velocity magnitude and direction and/or water surface elevation. Boundary conditions, for instream flow analysis, are usually defined at the up-stream or down-stream boundaries of the study segment. In addition to the boundary conditions it is important to collect both quantitative and qualitative hydraulic information within the boundaries of the study segment. This additional data is used for model calibration and verification.

Subject field(s)
  • Equipment and Tools (Water Supply)
  • Wastewater Treatment
CONT

Improvements on [the separate tank process] include : stepped aeration, with more oxygen entering upstream than down-stream, stepped feed; the water to be treated is fed in at a number of points along the aeration channel in different ways according to circumstances, while all the recirculated sludge is returned to the head of the tank.

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement et outillage (Alimentation en eau)
  • Traitement des eaux usées
CONT
