DREDGE LINE [7 records]

Record 1 2023-02-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

Shellfish are collected by towing the dredge slowly, usually in a circular progression over the bottom. A conventional mechanical dredge is towed at the end of a line and collects the catch in a chain bag.

Record 2 2008-10-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dredging
CONT

The mining dredges were land-locked floating machines, digging the ponds that allowed them to float-and thus move-across the area to be mined. The floating dredge most commonly operated in the North was the California-type, also known as bucket-line dredge. This type of dredge used a continuous line of buckets(called the "digging ladder") to scrape the bottom and edge of the pond.

CONT

Parks Canada is issuing a Call for Tenders for the supply, fabrication and installation of a new foundation for the digging ladder at Dredge no. 4 National Historic Site of Canada in Dawson City, Yukon.

CONT

The depth of digging is controlled by changing the angle of the digging ladder through a running rigging system extending from a winch on the port side.

PHR

Floating deep-digging ladder dredge.

Record 3 2004-06-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dredging
DEF

An hydraulic cutter dredge that uses a bucket wheel excavator in place of the traditional rotary cutter. The bucket wheel is characterized by its high cutting torque in both directions and by a positive feed of the excavated material into the mouth of the dredged pipe.

OBS

Suction dredges, available in many sizes, are the most widely used type of dredge. They move soil by suction and pumping through pipes... The type of material to be excavated determines whether a cutter head will be required on the end of the suction line. A cutter head is used when material has to be loosened and cut up into small enough pieces to get into the suction line and flow through the pipes to discharge.

Key term(s)

French

Domaine(s)
  • Dragage
CONT

Record 4 1999-10-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
  • Dredging
DEF

The topmost layer of sand or mud on the seafloor.

CONT

In all cases of sand backfills and in many cases of partially dredged bulkheads, the anchor yield will be sufficient to cause a bulkhead displacement essentially similar to a rotation around its intersection with a dredge line.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
  • Dragage
DEF
