Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 9, English, - leak

2, record 9, French, - fuite

In one of the larger and more Complex operations ever supported in the Arctic by the National Science Foundation(NSF), an ice breaker was frozen into the perennial pack ice and left to drift for a full year. From October, 1997 to October 1998, the ship served as a floating scientific research station, supporting the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean(SHEBA) project. The mission was to acquire data on the great canopy of pack ice, about the size of the United States, that covers the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Researchers at the ice station studied the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and snow cover, to determine how these media interact through the surface heat budget, and how the interactions affect climate. 1, record 10, English, - SHEBA

A staring sensor is one that can lock onto a point and compensate for the forward motion of the platform. This mitigates the areal change platform-induced problem, however, other motion problems will become significant. A staring sensor must compensate for pixel change as the platform moves toward or away from the chosen staring point. In this staring geometry, one will have to consider the drift induced by slightly imperfect aiming or imperfect stabilization. In all viewing modes, the stability of the platform is important, as any jitter or vibrations will be transformed into pixel motion on the ground. 3, record 11, English, - staring%20sensor

Angular velocity is the time rate of change of angular displacement. More simply it is a measure of how fast an object is rotating. For example, the measure of a skater’s spinning speed during a sit spin is called angular velocity. Angular velocity is calculated by subtracting the initial angular position from the final angular position and dividing by the time it took to get from the initial to final position. Angular velocity is measured in radians/second (SI units) or degrees/second or revolutions/second (English units). 4, record 14, English, - angular%20velocity

Radiant frosts occur when large amounts of clear, dry air moves into an area and there is almost no cloud cover at night. During these times, the plants, soil, and other objects which are warmer than the very cold night sky will "radiate" their own heat back to space and become progressively colder. In fact, the plants cool(by radiating their heat) themselves to the point that they can cause their own damage. The plant tissues which are directly exposed to the sky become the coldest. These radiation losses can cause the buds, blossoms, twigs, leaves, etc. to become 1-2°C colder than the surrounding air which radiates very little of its heat.... The amount of heat lost to wind drift is often at least equal to radiative heat losses that are in the range of 10 to 30 watts per square meter(W/m2) or more. Consequently, the replacement heat must be greater than the sum of both radiative and advective heat losses during "successful" frost protection activities... 1, record 17, English, - radiative%20heat%20loss

Some herbicides and insecticides are prone to vapour drift and can seriously hurt animals and humans. Vapour drift can occur even when there is no particle(droplet) drift, and even dry spray deposits can send vapours into the atmosphere. Vapour drift increases with air temperature, therefore the application of volatile products should be avoided on, or just preceding, hot days. 3, record 24, English, - vapour%20drift
