The Round Dance ceremony illustrates the Cree philosophy of death and its relationship between us and Spirits[. The group joins] hands in a circle and [dances] clockwise with the drum and singers sitting in the middle. 3, record 1, French, - danse%20en%20cercle

Certain Inuit groups... used ridicule in the form of song duels as a means of conflict resolution. For example, two men who had failed to resolve a conflict by other means would secretly compose derisive songs about their adversary. The men's wives would also learn these songs. The whole camp gathered in a large igloo to observe the song duel. The wives would sing their husband's song in turn, while the husband would beat a drum and dance in the middle of the igloo. 1, record 2, English, - song%20duel

1, record 2, French, - duel%20des%20chansons

There is something of the "old" Mahler in this work, for instance, an ironically set ländler in the first scherzo, an exquisitely paced and lengthy lead-in to a foiled climax at the beginning of the finale which is brutally snuffed out by a thudding drum beat, and an ending for the first movement that simply evaporates in a pianissimo so quiet one honestly has to wonder if the sound is real or imagined. 1, record 3, English, - drum%20beat

1, record 3, French, - battement%20de%20tambour
