When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 3, English, - docking%20telegraph

Joy presently offer both chain ripper miners and the rotary drum head-type miners introduced in 1968. However, the rotary drum head machines are proving to be the more popular and look to be superseding the chain ripper models produced by Joy. In operation the chain ripper machine works as follows. The machine is trammed forward into position then, while the main chassis of the machine remains stationary, the cutting head moves forward, sumping into the coal at the bottom of the face. The rotation of the chains carries the broken coal back over the head and deposits it on to the chain conveyor which then moves the coal to the rear end of the machine. When the sumping operation is complete, the head travels upwards towards the top of the seam, breaking out the coal as it moves. Setting out. Following fatliquoring the leather is removed from the drum, piled on pallets or horses and allowed to mull for a period of time. The wet leather is then put through a machine to wring out moisture and at the same time spread the side out so that wrinkles are not pressed into the stock. This operation is called setting out. At the end of this operation the leather contains about 50 per cent moisture and is ready for drying. 3, record 33, English, - setting%20out%20machine

The countercurrent classifier is an inclined, slowly rotating cylindrical drum with continuous spiral flights attached to the interior of the shell forming helical troughs. Direction of rotation is such that material in the troughs is impelled toward the higher end. The lower end of the shell is closed except for a central overflow opening.(...) Wash water introduced at the upper end drains from the lifting flights above the normal water level and progresses countercurrent to the sand toward the overflow. 3, record 35, English, - countercurrent%20classifier

Filtration with self-compacting of the cake. The principle of dewatering consists of compacting the sludge by rolling it on itself against a draining surface. In its best-known form, the Roto Plug, the pre-thickened sludge is fed at one end into a rotating, open filtering drum, which is set at a slight angle. The contact surface between the sludge and the filtering screen is constantly renewed and a cylindrical cake of sludge is gradually formed inside the drum and, by its own weight, sets up a differential filtering pressure. This gives a first concentration... 1, record 36, English, - Roto%20Plug
