Phosphorous is a fertilizer that induces plant growth and algae and was also found in many commercial detergents at the time. Plants began growing, dying and decomposing in Lake Erie, creating anoxia(severe deficiency of oxygen) at the bottom of the lake and leaving the water's surface putrid and mossy.

Anoxic conditions can develop in a lake bottom when oxygen is depleted by decomposition processes. This often happens in eutrophic lakes and can result in fish kills.

A ghost forest is the watery remains of a once verdant woodland. As sea level rises, more and more saltwater encroaches on the land. Along the world's coasts and estuaries, invading seawater advances and overtakes the fresh water that deciduous trees rely upon for sustenance. The salty water slowly poisons living trees, leaving a haunted ghost forest of dead and dying timber. Still standing in or near brackish water, the decaying trees of a ghost forest resemble giant graying pillars that protrude into the air.

Flooding of forests from dam reservoirs, water diversions, and weather events, such as storm surges and hurricanes, are some examples of causes that can lead to the formation of ghost forests.

The causal agent of the chestnut blight C. parasitica belongs to the Ascomycetes. Its spores are carried and spread by rain, wind, insects, snails and birds. Once the spores land in a wound of a chestnut tree they germinate and the fungus begins to grow in the bark and cambium.

Yellow Sigatoka. The first symptom of the disease is the appearance of yellow-green specks in the lower surface of the third and fourth youngest open leaf. The specks elongate and expand into clearly visible brown streaks. As the streaks further increase in size, they become elliptical brown spots surrounded by a yellow halo that separate the spot from the normal green leaf tissue. When the spots become fully developed, the central areas turn gray, which eventually are surrounded by dark brown or black margin with yellow halo. The spots group together to form large areas of light brown, dried-up leaf tissues. This leads to premature dying of the leaves.

The person-trade-off approach is the very essence of the saved-young-life equivalent(SAVE) procedure, which has been proposed as an alternative to the QALY procedure. Saving a young person from dying and restoring him or her to a healthy life is chosen as a reference outcome. This outcome is assigned the value 1. Other outcomes are described in terms of a) how severely ill the patients are before treatment and b) how much they are helped. The sod webworm is an off-white or tan-coloured caterpillar, about 2 cm long, that lives in the thatch layer of grass. Depending upon the species, it may have rows of darker spots along its back. If you have noticed small, whitish-brown moths flying above the lawn in the summer, you may have seen the adult stage of the sod webworm, the lawn moth. The adults are about 1 cm long with a wingspan of 2 cm. When at rest, they hold their wings close to their bodies. Two horns, forming a shape like a snout, protrude from their heads.

The first signs of sod webworm injury are small patches of yellow or brown grass on the lawn. If the infestation worsens, the brown patches join together, producing large, irregular areas of dying grass.

A nationwide scheme has begun on Dartmoor to conserve the country's dozen rarest breeds of horse. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust began collecting semen form 10 Dartmoor ponies on Widecombe-in-the-Moor on Wednesday. About 1, 000 stallions from rare breeds across the UK will be evaluated over the next five to eight years. The programme was launched a year ago, after the foot-and-mouth outbreak put many breeds at risk of dying out. Vulnerable breed : So far, £750, 000 of the £2. 5m target has been raised. The trust hopes to create semen banks for each rare breed to protect against future threats to the bloodline. Dartmoor ponies are categorised as "vulnerable" by the trust, with many bloodlines in danger.
