The reclaimer, or garbage collector aids the dynamic storage allocation in LISP. It periodically searches memory to locate list structures that are no longer needed. The memory cells in this garbage collector are then added to the list of available space to be used in making new list structures. Reclaimers are also used in most other list-processing languages.
