A device used to establish a spacecraft’s attitude relative to the Earth by detecting the limits of the Earth’s disk at infrared wavelength.

OBS

Sensing is either static or dynamic. The static sensor uses a common direction-sensing technique involving an arrangement of sensors grouped around the pointing axis so that they each receive the same illumination when the sensor is exactly aligned with the target-source.... The dynamic sensor operates by scanning across the Earth's disk and detecting the temperature difference between space and Earth. It is otherwise known as a "horizon sensor" or "horizon scanner".

Outer boundary of the plasmasphere, at a distance of about four Earth radii, at which there is a sharp drop in the electron density and an increase in temperature with distance.

For the Earth, the plasmapause is described as the equipotential boundary between a region dominated by the corotational electric field, where there are closed particle orbits, and a region dominated by a convective dawn-dusk electric field, where there are no closed orbits. However, the existence of such a static boundary for the dynamic magnetospheres of Uranus and Neptune has been called into question, by two dimensional guiding center calculations for particles in the magnetic equatorial plane.
