Record 2 2016-11-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • General Mechanics (Physics)
DEF

The friction between two surfaces which are sliding over each other.

CONT

Sliding friction. The force needed to keep one solid surface just sliding over another is known as kinetic or dynamic friction. The force which has to be applied to initiate motion is slightly greater and is called static or limiting friction.

OBS

dynamic friction : term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mécanique générale (Physique)
DEF

Key term(s)
  • fricción cinética

Record 3 2014-09-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electrical Components
  • Braking Devices (Mechanical Components)
CONT

Virtually all motorized electrically propelled rail rapid transit vehicles are equipped with propulsion systems with electric(dynamic) braking capability. Either the electric braking system or the friction braking system can be the controlling system with responsibility for providing the blending function. However, friction braking is the ultimate brake with responsibility for safe operation; therefore, care must be taken to ensure that the electric brake feedback signal shall not provide a false indication of electric braking effort.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Composants électrotechniques
  • Freins (Composants mécaniques)
DEF

Record 4 2014-04-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Lubrication Technology
  • Textile Industries
  • Wheels and Tires (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
DEF

The ratio of the frictional force between two bodies in contact, parallel to the surface of contact, to the force, normal to the surface of contact, with which the bodies press against each other.

CONT

Sliding friction. The force needed to keep one solid surface just sliding over another is known as kinetic or dynamic friction. The force which has to be applied to initiate motion is slightly greater and is called static or limiting friction. The friction increases approximately in proportion to the total perpendicular force(normal reaction) between the surfaces and its ratio to the normal reaction between the surfaces is called a coefficient of friction.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
  • Tribologie
  • Industries du textile
  • Roues et pneus (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
DEF

Record 5 1991-12-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

[A belay] to prevent rope breakage and excessive impact ... in which the belayer allows some of the rope to slide through his hands, braking the speed of the fall [of a climber] more gradually.

CONT

Dynamic belays, to be given properly, must be carefully practiced in advance, because the braking hand must use varying pressure depending on the friction that has already built up as the rope passes through a series of carabineers.

OBS

All the belays commonly used in North American climbing are dynamic, because of the energy-absorbing properties of the rope, because of the give in the belayer’s body and the anchor, and because some rope will slide through the hands even when the rope is held tight.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de montagne
DEF
