Subject field(s)
  • Types of Aircraft
OBS

This configuration is now under development by a number of companies, including de Havilland Aircraft of Canada, as a future supersonic replacement for Harrier-type vertical take-off and landing fighters. Design would employ some kind of thrust augmentation system such as de Havilland's Ejector Lift/Vectored Thrust.

CONT

The ejector lift principle, as developed by de Havilland Canada and used by General Dynamics in the E-7 design, also ducts forwards but to a specially-designed chamber where ambient air is entrained by the fan stream and a thrust-augmentation effect is obtained. The main engine nozzle swivels for lift thrust and, in forward flight, the fan stream has its own separate exhaust with afterburner.

DEF

Thrust augmentation system developed by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada to increase vertical lift characteristics of proposed supersonic short takeoff and vertical landing fighter aircraft. Basically, an ejector mixes a secondary flow of air with the primary flow from a turbofan engine within an encasing shroud. This has the effect of increasing the thrust by 50 to 100 percent. Augmented primary thrust is ejected through a nozzle. When the ejector is within or part of the fuselage, it is referred to as a fuselage ejector, or fuselage ejector lift.
