Lattice orientations of garnet microstructures, obtained using electron-backscatter diffraction(EBSD) methods, were used to model garnet growth and deformation mechanisms. EBSD analysis uses the backscattered electrons(BSE) emitted from a specimen, in a scanning electron microscope(SEM), to form a diffraction pattern that is indexed. EBSD enables crystallographic orientation measurements of minerals as small as 1 micrometer, and the calculation of misorientation axes and angles(>1 degree) between any two measurements. 2, record 7, English, - electron%20backscattered%20diffraction%20analysis

Researchers in the field of connectomics endeavor to analyze the complex synaptic network formed by the billions of interconnected neurons. By thinly slicing neural tissue and imaging each section with a scanning electron microscope at high resolution, fine structural details can be visualized. Careful delineation of each neuron in the 3-D volume allows for the high-resolution mapping of all connections made by each cell, providing a detailed wiring diagram of the brain : the connectome. 1, record 9, English, - connectomics

In the STM [scanning tunneling microscope] the "aperture" is a tiny tungsten probe, its tip ground so fine that it may consist of only a single atom and measure just. 2 nanometer in width. Piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip to within a nanometer or two of the surface of a conducting specimen so close that the electron clouds of the atom at the probe tip and of the nearest atom of the specimen overlap. When a small voltage is applied to the tip, electrons "tunnel" across the gap, generating a minuscule tunneling current. The strength of the current is exquisitely sensitive to the width of the gap; typically it decreases by a factor of 10 each time the gap is widened by. 1 nanometer-half the diameter of an atom. 2, record 12, English, - tunneling%20current

1, record 16, French, - pointe

The analytical electron microscope(AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope(TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). Since the electrons must penetrate through the specimen, the specimen dimensions must be no greater than 1 micrometer thick, and preferably in the range of 100 nm. Bulk specimens may be thinned to this range by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and ion sputtering techniques, all of which are available in the microanalysis laboratory. As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0. 3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry(EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry(EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2. Quantitative analysis is carried out by means of a relative sensitivity factor method based on glass, mineral, and metal alloy standards. 2, record 29, English, - analytical%20electron%20microscope

2, record 29, French, - microscope%20%C3%A9lectronique%20analytique

Electron backscattered diffraction in a scanning electron microscope allows the crystallographic orientation of small grains to be measured precisely. EBSD can be used to study crystallographic preferred orientations, grain boundary and twin characteristics, to quantitatively map grain microstructures and for characterisation of fine-grained phases. We are using the EBSD to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic signatures of deformation recrystallisation and reaction processes in rocks. 1, record 37, English, - electron%20backscattered%20diffraction

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. For both electrons and positrons the microscope can be run in one of two modes : magnifying mode in which particles leaving the target are focussed onto a CEMA plate assembly to form a magnified image and scanning mode in which the amplitude of a signal is recorded as a function of the position(and possibly energy) of the incident beam. As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. As a positron microscope, however, source considerations will limit its immediate use to magnifying mode, i. e. positron reemission microscopy. 2, record 40, English, - positron%20microscope

[Electron Microscopy of Cotton. Preparation of Ultrathin Sections.... ] Expansion Technique.... ion Etching(Spit).... Preparation of Fibers.... Auxiliary Techniques. Dispersion Staining. Cotton fibers are embedded in a cargille medium, the refractive index of which is chosen such that its wavelength dispersion curve and that of the object intersect at...=580 nm. When viewed with a central stop in the microscope objective lens, the fiber then has a magenta color.
