Collectors provide the input to the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance(ISTAR) system. They are tasked in accordance with the Commander's priorities and they respond through the ISTAR system to contribute to the all-source intelligence product. Collectors can be electronic or human. In effect, every soldier on the battlefield is a collector. Within the ISTAR system, however, we use the term collector to refer to those units and sub-units whose primary mission is information collection.
