While the uses of mass analyzers in the microelectronics industry include some exotic applications, such as SIMS, the greatest number of systems are used for various types of gas analysis. Applications for mass analyzers include process monitoring, process engineering and control in such areas as evaporation, MBE, sputter etch and deposition, plasma etch and deposition, ion, implantation, LPCVD, CVD, and diffusion furnaces. An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver(usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar.

The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems.

There are three basic generic types of lidar: range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations (such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground.

Overspeed conditions can occur in an engine for a number of reasons, such as for example, a sudden unforeseeable reduction in the engine load, a failure in the metering valve of the engine's fuel delivery system, or an erroneous signal from an associated electronic engine control(EEC) which modulates the metering valve to an excessively high flow setting. It is known to provide an overspeed protection system that monitors a speed of the engine, such as the rotational speed of the power turbine of a gas turbine engine, and upon detection of an overspeed condition will reduce or stop the flow of fuel to the engine from the fuel delivery system.

Stealth technology has as its fundamental principle the prevention of detection by the enemy, and applies not only to aircraft as is commonly assumed, but also increasingly to naval vessels and to armoured vehicles, although in the latter cases, it is nascent technology upon which comment must be reserved. Stealth technology, therefore, does not simply mean the evasion by aircraft of radar through the reduction of radar signature. It also encompasses the reduction of an aircraft’s visibility in other spectra, most notably acoustic, visual, and infra-red. Consequently the popular term "stealth technology" would perhaps be better referred to as "low-observable technology."

The electronics expert functions at three levels. At the local level of the circuit’s components, the electronics expert applies general knowledge of the principles of electronics to propagate quantitative information about voltage and currents across components. These local inferences, expressed as quantitative ranges, are then translated into qualitative assertions for a rule-based system that infers the behavior of the circuit’s modules. Finally, at the global level, the electronics expert uses circuit-specific knowledge to analyze the circuit in terms of the behavior of logical modules. The circuit-specific knowledge is represented as a behavior tree which is central to the expert’s reasoning capabilities.

The electronic expert is a separate on-call system component that may be asked for help or assistance by the user. The range of assistance it provides to the user relates to explanations about various electronics concepts..., statements about the qualitative dependencies between the device parameters and the specific circuit parameters..., the detection and elimination of redundancy in user built circuits....
