Le carnet de route doit être tenu soigneusement à jour [...] Il doit comporter notamment : - dates, heures, point de départ et d'arrivée; - durée de vol; - composition de l'équipage; - nombre de passagers; - point fixe du ou des moteurs; - incidents survenus au cours du vol; - signature du commandant de bord.

Le carnet de bord est à peu près semblable au carnet de route en ce qui a trait à son utilisation. Cette pièce doit être signée après chaque vol par le commandant de bord et par le responsable de l'entretien. Dans le cas d'Air Canada, la composition de l'équipage et le nombre de passagers n'y figurent pas. On y trouve, au recto, les renseignements suivants : - remarques sur le déroulement de l'approche en automatique; - numéro du vol et date; - données relatives au vol (branches et temps); - diverses observations mécaniques; - incidents survenus en cours de vol; au verso : réparations à entreprendre à l'escale; - travail effectué par l'équipe d'entretien et signature du responsable.

Le livre de bord est un registre affecté à chaque avion. On y inscrit les dates, les vols, les parcours, les incidents, etc. Certaines compagnies l'appellent carnet de route et Air Canada, carnet de bord.
