For example, a corporation with equity of $5 million issues bonds with a face value of $2 million. The corporation is trading on the equity in that the interest of the bonds, as a percent, may be less than the percent return on total capital($7 million). Thus, the corporation is leveraging its total investment. Trading on the equity increases the risk of bankruptcy because the fixed-interest charges on debt may exceed the return on total capital. 4, record 3, English, - leveraging

A loan structured in such a way that it can be converted into equity. An example is an income note that acts as equity, i. e. it bears interest only if the project generates interest. This means it has the form of equity(cf. stocks where income is generated only if the company pays a dividend). An example of the use of this type of instrument is in high-risk countries where an equity investment would be lost at once but an equity-like instrument, if dollar-denominated, would guarantee the capital and ensure income if the project produced income. 1, record 11, English, - equity%2Dlike%20instrument

The opportunity cost of using investment resources in a project rather than in their next best alternative use; usually expressed in the form of an interest rate. The reduction in non-project benefits in relation to project objectives that is a result of using capital in the project. In practice, usually a weighted average calculation of the cost of securing project capital from various sources. In financial analysis, the weighted average cost to the firm or farm of equity capital and of borrowed capital from likely sources. In economic analysis, usually the weighted average cost of capital to the economy as a whole, but sometimes the weighted average cost of capital to the public sector. The rate at which benefits and costs are discounted in calculating the net present worth, the net benefit-investment ratio, or the benefit-cost ratio. The cut-off rate for project analysis, and hence the minimum acceptable internal rate of return. 3, record 14, English, - opportunity%20cost%20of%20capital

Annual data for 637 manufacturing firms were used to show how asymmetric information in capital markets affects the financing of investment. The data, obtained from the Value Line Data Base for 1975-1985, were adjusted to real terms by dividing by the relevant price deflators. The estimated equity betas from the database were used to implement the capital asset pricing model(CAPM) utilized in the study. The data were adjusted to asset betas, and Moody's Aaa bond rate was used as the risk-free rate. 1, record 16, English, - equity%20beta
