One of the four provinces to form the Canadian Confederation in 1867, the second in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation and, if on the same year, according to the population of the entering provinces. The territory covered by the province changed, from the original lands bordering the St. Lawrence River, to extended boundaries northward in 1898 and a much larger territory including nearly all of the Labrador in 1912, to finally get to its actual boundaries in 1927.

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Quebec" for the geographical entity, "Province of Quebec" for the provincial administration, "Quebec" as the short form, and "Que." as the abbreviation.

The name of this province appears among the "Names of pan-Canadian significance" listing names of geographical entities having well-known forms in both official languages of Canada. USAGE ON FEDERAL MAPS: Names of geographical entities of pan-Canadian significance are to appear in both their forms on a bilingual federal map or, in the case of separate English and French versions of a map, in the form appropriate to the language of the map. [From the appendix on the use of the official languages in Canadian geographical names on federal maps, to "Principles and Procedures for Geographical Naming" of the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC).]

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is QC (or CA-QC). This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. The former symbol PQ is no longer used since 1990.

Note 2-This notion may be extended to the constituent elements of a channel, such as telegraphy relay.
