The new karyotyping methods introduced by Schrock et al use fluorescent dyes that bind to specific regions of chromosomes. By using a series of specific probes each with varying amounts of the dyes, different pairs of chromosomes have unique spectral characteristics. A unique feature of the technology is the use of an interferometer similar to ones used by astronomers for measuring light spectra emitted by stars. Slight variations in color, undetectable by the human eye, are detected by a computer program that then reassigns an easy-to-distinguish color to each pair of chromosomes. The result is a digital image rather than film, in full color. Pairing of the chromosomes is simpler because homologous pairs are the same color, and aberrations and cross-overs are more easily recognizable. Frame Representation. A frame is a collection of slots and values that is used to represent a piece of knowledge. For example a "person frame" could have slots named : name, sex, age, hair color, eye color, height, and weight. A particular person would then have all the slots filled in with the correct values. Also, most frame-based systems extend this idea to inheritance. For example, a person is an example of a mammal, which has its own slots. A system can then make inferences based on these inherited values(e. g., mammals are warm blooded, therefore "Joe" is warm blooded). Because of the emphasis on CML in Chapter 4, this book sometimes refers to frames as being two dimensional, with rows being individual frames and columns being slots. 2, record 14, English, - frame%2Dstructured%20representation
