The matchlock constituted the first mechanical device for firing.(...) For this improvement(...) two modifications of the hand cannon were necessary : the addition of a pan to hold the priming powder, which replaced the match in setting off the powder charge inside the barrel, and the addition of the serpentine, holding the match and thus freeing the hand of the shooter or his aide. These original matchlocks did not as yet include the leverage system worked by a trigger and indeed did, not have true "locks". Instead, the serpentine was a simple S-shaped arm pivoted in its center, the lower end serving as a handle by which the shooter moved the device manually. 1, record 7, English, - match

Condenser discharge exploders. Built-in hand-cranked A. C. generators are used to charge the condensers; the generated voltage is doubled by appropriate circuitry and converted to D. C. The machines are provided with safety devices to ensure that only the full condenser charge can be applied to the terminals and firing circuit. If owing to a mistake or a defect the machine is not fully charged, the terminals of the machine cannot be placed under tension, even when the firing switch is operated. If the machine is charged but then for some reason cannot be fired, the condenser will be automatically discharged internally over a built-in-high-ohm resistor. All precautions have been taken to prevent any danger to the operator. The terminals of all condenser discharge machines are coloured red. 2, record 27, English, - condenser%20discharge%20exploder

2, record 27, French, - exploseur%20%C3%A0%20condensateur
