Subject field(s)
  • Ecosystems
  • Nutritive Elements (Biological Sciences)
CONT

One significant knowledge gap necessary for assessing ecosystem-wide impacts of restoration in... estuaries is a characterization of baseline lower trophic levels. These lower tropic levels are the lowest part of the food web where organisms such as plant-like phytoplankton serve as food to animals such as zooplankton in the water column. Other organisms of lower trophic levels include plant-like microphytobenthos and marine worms living within the sediments. These organisms form an important part of the estuary ecosystem [and] provide energy at the base of the food chain [that] support the growth of larger predators at the top[, ] such as speckled trout or red fish[. These] organisms also help to break down debris, put oxygen back into sediments, and can provide a biological window into the health of an estuary.

Pilot fish,(Naucrates ductor), widely distributed marine fish of the family Carangidae(order Perciformes). Members of the species are found in the open sea throughout warm and tropical waters.... The pilot fish is elongated and has a forked tail, a lengthwise keel on each side of the tail base, and a low first dorsal fin. It grows to a length of about 60 cm(2 feet) but is usually about 35 cm long. It is distinctively marked with five to seven vertical, dark bands on a bluish body. The pilot fish is carnivorous and follows sharks and ships apparently to feed on parasites and leftover scraps of food.

Redbanded rockfish are a deep-bodied fish with a rounded head. Underwater they appear white or light pink with four darker red or orange vertical bars on the body(one on the caudal peduncle). The bars tend to be more prominent on smaller fish. The first bar extends from the front of the first dorsal fin to the base of the pectoral fin. They have two oblique bands crossing their heads, one extending backward from the eye and the other near the upper jaw.

OBS

Une même désignation peut se référer à une entité géographique et à une entité géologique, parfois avec une légère variante. Il importe de bien distinguer l'une de l'autre et d'utiliser la graphie correcte selon le contexte.

CONT

The most successful fishes of the southeast Atlantic U. S. A. migrate to use estuaries as juvenile fish nursery areas. These and other migrations serve to maximize surplus power, which in turn is related to fitness(=lifetime reproductive output). Analysis of the costs and benefits of estuarine nursery areas suggest that surplus power is gained by juvenile fish that tolerate variable estuarine abiotic conditions rather than avoid extreme conditions as adults may do.(Dialog Data Base)
