FISH DAM [5 records]

Record 1 2023-01-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
  • Fish
CONT

American eel... often pass hydropower dams during adult spawning migrations.... Fish that already passed an upstream dam incurred higher downstream mortality compared with individuals without passage experience. Additionally, fish endured long delays at dams... Low flows exacerbated the risk of mortality and delay.

CONT

Record 3 2010-09-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
  • Hydroelectric Power Stations
DEF

The reservoir behind a run-of-river dam.

CONT

Because the mill takes water for its operations from the dam’s head pond, ensuring the mill’s water intake will function without the dam is a critical precondition to breaching the dam.

CONT

This project is designed to provide safe and effective fish passage for anadromous fish above a 9 foot high, 90 foot long dam. It will provide anadromous fish with access to upstream riverine and ponded habitat. River herring spawning habitat will be increased by an addition [of] 74, 225 m². Alewife in particular will benefit from excellent nursery habitat in the dam's head pond.

OBS

Weirs and barrages are different types of ’run-of-river’ dams, this means that while they raise the water level upstream they create only a small reservoir (’head pond’) and cannot effectively regulate downstream flows.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
  • Centrales hydro-électriques
DEF

CONT

CONT

The owner or occupier of every fish-way or canal shall keep it open and unobstructed and shall keep it supplied with such sufficient quantity of water as the Minister considers necessary to enable the fish frequenting the waters in which the fish-way or canal is placed to pass through it during such times as are specified by any fishery officer, and, where leaks in a dam cause a fish-way therein to be inefficient, the Minister may require the owner or occupier of the dam to prevent the leaks therein.

Record 5 1986-11-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
CONT

Fish passes usually take the form of fish ladders and fish locks.... The Borland fish lock was developed in Scotland as an alternative to fish ladders. It operates on the same intermittent principle as a ship lock but is constructed as a closed conduit. Intermittent closure of the gates at the bottom causes the continuous flow through the lock to fill the conduit at intervals, and thus allows fish waiting in the bottom chamber to be raised through the height of the dam. The lock also serves at other seasons to flush young salmon down past the dam.
