OBS

A trolling line is a line with one or more baited hooks(or lures) towed behind a boat. The boat may tow many lines, often from outriggers... or a single line hand-tended by a small crew in a dinghy... The lines may be near the surface or some distance below the surface depending on where in the water column the fish aggregate, which can be adjusted by the amount of weight on each line, the length of the line and the towing speed.

[A] numerical value used to demonstrate the trend in relative abundance over time.

CONT

Estimates of catch typically make up the bulk of the data that is applied to a stock assessment model. But most stock assessment models also require some kind of index of abundance. The index of abundance is a value that indicates the trend in relative abundance over time. Often[, ] an index of abundance is simply the number of fish caught during a survey. The index of abundance for a cod stock, for example, may be the average number of cod caught per tow from a research vessel. A set of knives, arranged to be raised and lowered by hand, used to slice fish into several pieces of predetermined length.

CONT

The machine would take the fish tail first and cut off all the fins, then slit the belly and used two rotary wire wheels to rip the guts out (and make quite a mess). Next the fish went into the gang knife which cut the whole fish into pieces that were as high as a can. The pieces fell onto a conveyor belt and were fed into the rotary fish filler. This machine took the fish pieces and compacted them into can sized lumps and then stuffed them into a can and added a pinch of salt for flavor.

Lee's phenomenon : Frequently, the larger fish in a year-class have different mortality rates than the smaller ones : either greater or less, but usually greater. This can be detected when back-calculations of length at earlier ages are made from scales or otoliths, using samples that are representative of the whole of each age group involved. When a larger fraction of the larger fish die, the result is "Rosa Lee's phenomenon"...
