Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
DEF

A long box-shaped net that extends to the shoreline and is used to catch cod.

CONT

The cod trap is basically a room, with four walls and a floor, constructed of netting. Fish enter the trap through a doorway in the front wall. Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. It is held on location by a system of corner ropes anchored to the sea bottom.

DEF

A clear variation in the angle of the corpus calcareum [that] corresponds to a growth rate acceleration in [fish].

CONT

Recent declines in abundance of skates... have heightened the need for validated age and growth estimates... skate vertebral centra collected seasonally... were sectioned using a mass processing method, then used to reconstruct growth in each species.... Total counts were obtained by summing visible and estimated band counts. Growth curves were then fitted to all length-at-age data including sections deemed unreadable near the focus. The location of the birth band(BB) in each species was confirmed by comparing suspected birth band radius(BR) measurements with [vertebral radius(VR) ] measurements of available late-term embryos... and/or early young-of-the-year fish... Regressions between VR and [total length] for each species, along with published hatch lengths, were also used to verify the location of the BB along the corpus calcareum of each section...

OBS

Birthmarks are usually represented by an angle change along the centrum face of whole vertebrae or along [the] intermedialia-corpus calcareum interface with an associated ring on the corpus calcareum in sectioned centra, but this feature may not be distinct in either.

DEF

Any fish of the order Heterosomata, e.g. halibut, turbot, plaice, sole, flounder, etc.

OBS

Flounder: any of numerous flattened fishes constituting the order Heterosomata: flatfish.

OBS

Plaice: any of various American flatfishes.

OBS

Flounder: any of numerous similar [to Platichthys flesus, the European flounder] or related non-European flatfishes.

OBS

Sole: any of various flatfishes of families other than Soleidae, esp. when for table use.

OBS

any of about 600 species of oval-shaped, flattened fishes of the order Pleuronectiformes.... One of the most notable features of the flatfish is the location of the eyes-both on one side of the head. Another is the colouring; the eyed side of the fish(uppermost as it lies on the bottom) is pigmented by the lower, blind side is normally white.

OBS

The term "flounder" is also used specifically for a species, Platichthys flesus, which should be more correctly called "European flounder", and more generally for any number of flatfishes of the families Pleuronectidae and Bothidae of the order Pleuronectiformes.

DEF

CONT

Principles of Organic Aquaculture. "Even though we don’t have standards, "says Dolinski, "we can assume the same principles used for organic livestock production will apply for aquatic animal production". The water will have to be clean and free of contaminants. It is very likely the water will have to be more strictly monitored than other types of organic production. Residue analysis may be required on a regular basis. The production area will have to be surrounded by a barrier zone to prevent contamination. If there is risk from spray drift for example, a buffer zone will be required depending on your location. The fish will have to be fed organically certified food supplements. The only useable fish medications would be identified on a permitted list, if there are any approved at all. The fish would have to be reared so they could behave "naturally"...
